The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. This is just the second vintage where Robert Mondavi’s Reserve Cabernet is To Kalon Vineyard-designated. When Robert Mondavi chose the To Kalon Vineyard, in west Oakville, as the home for his new winery in 1966 he remarked that, "It was a vineyard with a distinguished history and a magical nature. Ideal soils, sunlight, and rain—to my eye, the vineyard was a treasure." Those sentiments were re-confirmed when the To Kalon Vineyard was named the Vineyard of the Year by the California State Farm Bureau in 2011. This Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is blended from the finest blocks within To Kalon. 2012 was of course an outstanding vintage. The combination of warm days and cool nights endured through the growing season creating the perfect recipe for long, flavor-building hang time and optimal sugar to acid balance. The grapes were hand-harvested with three stages of strict sorting: first, on the vine, then by individual clusters, and then again by single berry following de-stemming. A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petite Verdot aged 20 months in 100% new French-oak. High praise all around for this iconic Napa Cab. Wine Spectator scored it 95 points saying "An iron fist in a velvet glove, this begins with a supple, rich core of currant, black cherry, anise and sage, firming up with tannins from oak and grape. Glides along gracefully, never losing the core fruitiness, while the tannins and gravelly earth accents lend the flavors tension and traction. Drink now through 2029."

It’s easy to use the word “huge” to describe this Cabernet, which contains smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It immediately takes over the palate with ripe, opulent cherry pie, blackberry tart, cassis liqueur, green olive and oak flavors. The tannins are very strong, the most powerful of Mondavi Cabernets in years. Which leads to the question of ageability. Where’s this wine going? On the negative side is high alcohol, which gives it a burn. So drink it over the next 5–6 years.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a dense purple color, more tannin, structure and spice, terrific richness and plenty of black currant, vanillin and loamy soil characteristics. Given past track records, this full-bodied, impressive Reserve should easily age for 25–35 years.

Beautifully crafted, pure, rich and complex, featuring tiers of red and black fruit, cherry, raspberry and spice, gaining subtle oak and fresh earth details. The fine-grained tannins deliver backbone and grip, imparting an accent of dried herbs and oak on the graceful finish. Drink now through 2026.

Bright medium ruby. Cherry, menthol and flowers on the nose; a bit redder in its fruit qualities than the 2009 today. Then dense but distinctly cool on the palate, with strong graphite minerality currently overshadowing berry fruit. Finishes with substantial building, dusty tannins. It’s very early days for this wine, which is less harmonious today than the finished 2009.

This is the wine which embodies Robert Mondavi’s philosophy of making wines that are powerful yet gentle. Each year the blend reflects the “First Growth” quality of the famed To Kalon Vineyard. 90% of this Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is blended from the finest blocks within the To Kalon and an additional 10% comes from other select vineyards within the Oakville AVA. The grapes were hand-harvested into small containers and carefully sorted in our gravity-flow cellar. The clusters were gently destemmed directly into traditional French oak tanks for cold soak, fermentation and extended maceration – a total of 40 days of wine to skin contact – maximizing the extraction of varietal character and complexity while keeping the tannins round and supple. The new wine was drained and gently pressed into 100% new French-oak barrels. The final blend was assembled through repeated tasting trials over nineteen months of barrel aging. Tasting Panel Magazine scored it an amazing 99 points while Robert Parker gave it 95 and said "The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a dense purple color, more tannin, structure and spice, terrific richness and plenty of black currant, vanillin and loamy soil characteristics.
