Robert Keenan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

2004 marks the 28th vintage for the Robert Keenan Winery and the 4th consecutive vintage of “Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon. The five new Cabernet Sauvignon clones that were replanted as bench grafts in the spring of ’98 are now showing their individual characteristics. A combination of three of the five clones was chosen for this cuvee of 450 cases. Clone 7 (81%) provides the tremendously rich fruit in this wine, clone 4 (14%) provides a wonderful chocolaty component to the mid palette, and clone 15 (5%) adds just enough Spring Mountain District depth and complexity to perfect the blend. Enjoy now or years from now. A combination of three of the five clones was chosen for this cuvee of 450 cases. High in the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1,700 feet above the Napa Valley floor, are Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery and vineyards. This area was first identified as prime vineyard land by Peter Conradi in the late 19th century when he planted 100 acres of terraced vineyard in Zinfandel and Syrah grapes. The Conradi Winery operated until Prohibition when the vineyards and winery fell out of use. In 1974, Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the defunct Conradi Winery site. No vines remained. Only the crumbling walls of the former winery and a few old broken tanks told of its history, but Robert was certain the mountain top vineyards would be perfect for an estate winery. He replaced tree stumps and rocks with rows of Cabernet and Chardonnay, hired an engineer to redesign the original winery structure, and brought in a contractor to begin construction. The winery was made operational just in time for the harvest of 1977. From that time on, Keenan has earned a great reputation for producing wines of intense character and renowned acclaim. Read less

This is a Gold Medal Wine Club Diamond Series selection. 94+ Points, Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate – “A beautiful wine, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve boasts classic crème de cassis, cedar, tobacco leaf, spice box, and pain grille aromas and flavors. This impeccably made, full-bodied, super-concentrated Cabernet reveals good delineation and freshness as well as surprising definition and elegance for a wine of such power and intensity. If you haven’t discovered the wines of Robert Keenan, it’s time to jump on the bandwagon as quality appears to go from strength to strength.” 5 out of 5 Stars, Decanter magazine

Classic aromas of cedar, black currants, licorice, graphite, and spicy oak emerge from the full-bodied, powerful, opulent, opaque purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. This concentrated, rich, impressively-endowed Cabernet is a steal for the price.... Robert Parker. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2004 Robert Keenan Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

The profound 2004 Mernet Reserve is a 297-case blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This stunning offering demonstrates just how far Keenan has come over the last several years with their Bordeaux proprietary blend. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of black fruits, blueberries, licorice, sweet leather, chocolate truffles, and espresso roast. Full-bodied, opulent, and dense, it is already approachable, but should evolve for 15-20 years.
