Robert Foley Vineyards Charbono Napa Valley 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

From Magnum: Still explosive on the nose with black cherry and blueberry Pie filling aromas framed with tobacco and baking spices and all dusted with vanilla sugar. Rich and rugged in the mouth with lots of soft tannins covered with deep, rich blueberry and cherry fruit. the tannins build on the backend and turn this a touch dry, but there's still plenty to like. The backend shows the plummier, almost pruny side of Charbono with lots of toasty spice coming out on the moderately long finish which ends with more blueberry fruit and a streak of vanilla. A bit of a brute, but I like it. 89pts and might improve over the next 4-8 years.

During this period he also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, School House, and Engel Family wines. In 1998 Robert Foley Vineyards bottled their first Claret, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and over the last 10 years have expanded and diversified their own production. Bob’s reputation for producing very expressive wines which finish gracefully continues to develop at the new winery facility on the summit of Napa County’s Howell Mountain. interesting experience with this limited charbono. my least favorite foley to date. (though not in love with charbonos) very dark gorgeous color. found the nose funky, almost unpleasant after decanting. cherry, apple, spice and tobacco notes. novice here, and not sure what the fuss is about.

The new releases include a tasty 2006 Charbono, which offers attractive earthy, blackberry, raspberry, chocolate, and damp forest characteristics. Tasty, round, and medium-bodied with no hard edges, this straightforward, exuberant red should be drunk over the next 3-4 years.

Bright, deep ruby-red. Lively aromas of crushed berries, spicecake, licorice and flowers. At once creamy and firm, with a crushed fruit urgency accentuated by pepper and herbs and framed by an edge of acidity. The oak element here seems a bit more intrusive than in the 2006 version, giving the finish a slight toughness.

The talented Bob Foley turns out one of the two finest Charbonos in California. (Turley Cellars produces the other). Deep ruby/purple with notes of earth, mocha., black cherry, and spice, Foley's 2004 Charbono is full-bodied, chewy, slightly rustic, but tasty. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

Bright ruby-red. Wild crushed blackberry, tar, licorice and a meaty whiff of reduction on the complex nose. Juicy, reduced and a bit tart-edged, with a slightly disjointed quality to the crushed berry and dried fruit flavors. A distinctly dry style, even a bit austere on the back, with firm tannic spice and elevated acids.

Truly unique, sometimes gamey, sometimes overtly fruity, Charbono is like the winemaker’s “box of chocolates”. Deep purple color enhances the grapes' fruitiness - a touch of tangy acidity offers wide array of food pairing possibilities. A Napa Valley winemaker since 1977, Bob Foley (also winemaker for Pride,Switchback Ridge and Hourglass) works with some of the finest grapes in the world. Mountainous well-drained soils and the exposures of high elevations combine to concentrate aroma and flavor, as well as color and density, in wine grapes. This results in some of the most expressive wines imaginable. Traditional techniques and hands-on care, serve to elevate the remarkable character of our wines, to offer you a most rewarding wine experience."

Charbono is rumored to be the Dolcetto grape from Italy. Given the color and fruit of this wine it could very well be. Dense aromas of cherries, dark chocolate and licorice dominate. This is a solid, well-structured wine from Robert Foley.
