Robert Foley began his wine making career in the Napa Valley in 1977, working at a number of highly regarded Napa Valley wineries including the famous Pride Mountain Vineyards, where he spent 15 years as founding wine maker. During this period he also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, School House, and Engel Family wines. In 1998 Robert Foley Vineyards bottled their first Claret, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and over the last 10 years have expanded and diversified their own production. Bob’s reputation for producing very expressive wines which finish gracefully continues to develop at the new winery facility on the summit of Napa County’s Howell Mountain. Bob and wife and Business Manager Kelly Kehoe house over 1000 barrels in an extensive cave system which they completed in summer of 2008 for the production of Robert Foley wines. When Bob's not making wine he spends quality time with his wife Kelly, his children, and his new grand daughter. The top wine here is the classic 2003 Claret, a gorgeously proportioned, opaque purple-colored effort boasting a big, sweet nose of smoky meats, crème de cassis, coffee, and dark plums. Dense and opulent, with superb concentration, full body, high glycerin, decent acidity, and ripe tannin, this is a superb mouthful of wine that can be approached now or cellared for 12-15 years.

The inky/purple-hued, seamless 2004 Claret boasts gorgeous aromas of crème de cassis, blackberries, smoke, licorice, espresso roast, and spring flowers. With sensational concentration, full body, a voluptuous mouthfeel, decent acidity, and sweet tannin, it can be drunk now and over the next 10-15 years.

Saturated medium ruby. Very dark aromas of blackberry, licorice, minerals, tar and molten chocolate. Wonderfully ripe, thick and supple but not overly sweet. In fact, this tannic, brooding, youthfully backward wine is distinctly clenched today and not yet expressing its inherent complexity. Finishes with a medicinal austerity and big, dusty tannins. This boasts terrific fruit but needs four or five years of cellaring.

The prodigious 2005 Claret possesses a dense purple color in addition to beautiful aromas of creme de cassis, smoke, graphite, and cedar. Full-bodied, opulent, and voluptuously-textured with superb depth and purity in addition to a savory mouthfeel, and a surprisingly fleshy, forward personality, it should last for 10-15 years, but who will be able to resist it for that long?

Bright ruby-red. Very deep, vibrant aromas of cassis, minerals, tobacco, fresh herbs, licorice and tar; complex and, yes, claret-like. Dense and thick but suave and quite dry; very French in style. Tasted next to the splendid 2002 Reserve Claret made by Foley under the Pride Mountain Vineyards label, this is even bigger and more structured - but then it's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, while the Pride wine is two-thirds Merlot.

Dark, rich and massive, with gobs of flavor built around vibrant currant, blackberry and wild berry fruit, layers of exotic spicy oak nuances and rather big, ripe tannins. Yet for its size, it's powerful and balanced, with a long, luxurious aftertaste. Best from 2006 through 2012.

The virtually perfect 2001 Claret (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot) has more of everything. A tour de force in winemaking, it possesses extraordinary concentration, intensity, purity, and ripeness, yet retains an elegant style. With a spectacular perfume of blackberry liqueur, cassis, acacia flowers, graphite, espresso roast, and chocolate as well as a 60-second finish, this long, dense 2001 is still primary, but already fun to drink. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.
