Robert Foley Charbono Napa Valley 2006
We thank all of you Charbonophiles for expressing your enthusiasm for this varietal which I am personally so passionate about. Truly unique, sometimes gamey, sometimes overtly fruity, Charbono is like the winemaker's "box of chocolates". This vintage has given us more deep purple, grapey fruitiness and delightfully tangy acidity to offer a wide array of food-pairing possibilities. This is a California Wine.

Bright ruby-red. Wild crushed blackberry, tar, licorice and a meaty whiff of reduction on the complex nose. Juicy, reduced and a bit tart-edged, with a slightly disjointed quality to the crushed berry and dried fruit flavors. A distinctly dry style, even a bit austere on the back, with firm tannic spice and elevated acids.
Bright, deep ruby-red. Lively aromas of crushed berries, spicecake, licorice and flowers. At once creamy and firm, with a crushed fruit urgency accentuated by pepper and herbs and framed by an edge of acidity. The oak element here seems a bit more intrusive than in the 2006 version, giving the finish a slight toughness.
The talented Bob Foley turns out one of the two finest Charbonos in California. (Turley Cellars produces the other). Deep ruby/purple with notes of earth, mocha., black cherry, and spice, Foley's 2004 Charbono is full-bodied, chewy, slightly rustic, but tasty. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.
The new releases include a tasty 2006 Charbono, which offers attractive earthy, blackberry, raspberry, chocolate, and damp forest characteristics. Tasty, round, and medium-bodied with no hard edges, this straightforward, exuberant red should be drunk over the next 3-4 years.
