Robert Craig’s winemaking philosophy is that Cabernet Sauvignons should be made with minimal intervention, so that unique vineyard qualities are displayed in the finished wine. Distinguished by concentrated varietal character, appealing aromas and intense fruit flavors, these Cabernets are balanced, integrated and luscious upon release, while offering great potential for long-term aging. The Robert Craig Winery is located at 2300 atop Howell Mountain, overlooking Napa Valley. The winemaking regimen is undertaken with great care and attention to detail. Each vineyard block is monitored as harvest approaches to assure the proper degree of ripeness, and grapes are picked in small lots. Individual lots are processed separately during fermentation in order to maximize color and character development and closely manage the influence of tannin. Frequent pump-overs in early fermentation produce full extraction of the fruit while providing ripe, round tannins. This small-lot format expands the blending options, allowing for fine-tuning of the wine style. All Cabernets are aged in French oak barrels to gain added complexity. Read less

The nose is tight and of a younger cab. Palate is still approachable. Rich, mouth coating, supple red and black fruits. Perfect balance of tannin and good acidity. Very nice. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 6/19/10

ABOUT THIS WINE: The 2014 Affinity is a 100% estate grown, single vineyard selection from our La Londe Vineyard. Our primary mission at Robert Craig Winery is to produce wines that feature pure site expression. While the soul of Affinity has always come from La Londe Vineyard, now, each vintage, we seek to capture the essential, focused identity of this extraordinary site. VINEYARD: Just south of Stag’s Leap, nestled in the Mt. George Foothills on the eastern side of the Napa Valley, our La Londe estate vineyard has produced exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon for our portfolio since Bob Craig purchased the property back in 1993. As a hillside, cane-pruned site that bears just 2.8 tons per acre, the 30-year-old vines allow a rare display of the volcanic, stony soils in the finished wines. Grapes are small, deeply black flavored, and undeniably racy with a big backbone of acidity. Despite an inherent suppleness, the 2014 Affinity Cabernet will cellar easily for decades to come. VINTAGE: The 2014 growing season was even, moderate and extended. The dry conditions from 2012 and 2013 continued with even less rain present in the harvest window. Slow development of sugars, coupled with a naturally low PH (high acid) vineyard site meant that the resulting wine would have tremendous structure. 2014 will prove to be one of the most balanced vintages in decades. Revealing the pure pedigree of La Londe Vineyard, the 2014 has great depth, richness and balance. Opulent flavors of black raspberry and blackcurrant are wrapped in rich aromas of licorice, incense and spice box. Blend: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon 8% Petite Verdot 5% Merlot 3% Malbec 2% Cabernet Franc Barrel Aging: 18 months in Chateau-style French oak; 60% new & 40% 2nd year. Unfiltered and unfined.

Notes: The 2013 vintage marks our 20th anniversary of producing Affinity Cabernet Sauvignon. It is also our first vintage of Affinity bottled as a 100% estate grown, single vineyard selection from our La Londe Vineyard. Our primary mission at Robert Craig Winery is to produce wines that feature pure site expression. While the soul of Affiinity has always come from La Londe Vineyard, we are now able to capture the essential, focused identity of this extraordinary site. Vintage: Without doubt the 2013 vintage is one of the finest in recent memory and possibly one of the finest in the history of winegrowing in the Napa Valley. Only time will tell. Whereas the 2012 and 2013 vintages were marked with large yield increases on valley floor vineyards in Napa, our hillside and mountain properties were actually less abundant than average in overall tons. Along with terrific color and density in the 2013 wines, the acid and tannin structure was also exceptional making for wines that are balanced and layered without being overripe or fat. 2013 is truly a vintage to celebrate. Vintage: 2011 11/04/2014

Background:Hatched from the cabernet-infused mind of Bob Craig in 1993, this Bordeaux-inspired wine is a blend of the Left Bank Five (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec) with Cabernet Sauvignon commanding the lead on the dance floor. The Cabernet Sauvignon from this hillside property is unusually racy, and mineral laden, even for a boulder strewn, Napa Valley vineyard. The addition of the other four Bordeaux varieties is necessary for the depth, dimension and layers that are present in the wine each vintage; Petit Verdot for color, Malbec for weight, Cabernet Franc for structure and Merlot for luxurious mouthfeel. The fruit is hand picked and hand sorted, then kept in separate lots during fermentation and barrel aging. The resulting cabernet has an affinity for braised meats, grilled fish, hearty pastas, good books, fireplaces and summer evenings on the patio. - WineryThe Vineyard:The core of our Affinity Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from our estate vineyard in the foothills of Mount George on the southern end of Napa Valleys Vaca mountain range. The yields almost always fail to reach three tons per acre (thats very low for you non-farmers!) and the soils are unusually rocky and sparse. The vines are in their third decade of existence, and that makes for great concentration and a sense of origin in the resulting wine. Affinity Cabernet displays a charm in its youth each vintage due to the harmony brought forth in blending, but the structure offered by the volcanic soils means that this wine will reward patience in the cellar.Vintage:2011 was cold and wet in the spring, cool in the summer, and cold and wet at harvest. With long hang times, a short crop, and well drained soils, the 2011 vintage wines are an expression of growing site more so than in riper years. The mountain and hillside vineyards of Napa Valley produced wines which are deep, inviting and terroir-infused in an unusual vintage.Barrel Aging: 18 months in Chateau-style French oak; 65% new & 35% 2nd year. Grown in the foothills of Mount George, this is mostly cabernet sauvignon (82 percent) with petit verdot, merlot and small amounts of franc and malbec. Itrsquo;s a broad, richly oaked wine, packed with cherry-scented fruit holding robust tannins. Unyielding for now, this needs two or three years for the tannins to mellow.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Affinity bursts from the glass with an exciting array of dark red berries, flowers, licorice and sweet spices. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding brightness and lift. This gorgeous, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon should continue to drink beautifully for at least a handful of years. In 2009 the blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 2% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2017.

Good full ruby-red. Crystallized black cherry, coffee, mocha and loam on the nose, lifted by spices. Broad, smooth and tight-grained, with lovely intensity and lift to the flavors of black fruits, licorice and dark chocolate. Finishes with dusty tannins and a firm spine of acidity.
