Robert Craig 'Affinity' Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

External Review:

Hatched from the cabernet-infused mind of Bob Craig in 1993, this Bordeaux-inspired wine is a blend of the Left Bank Five (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec) with Cabernet Sauvignon commanding the lead on the dance floor. The Cabernet Sauvignon from this hillside property is unusually racy, and mineral laden, even for a boulder strewn, Napa Valley vineyard. The addition of the other four Bordeaux varieties is necessary for the depth, dimension and layers that are present in the wine each vintage; Petit Verdot for color, Malbec for weight, Cabernet Franc for structure and Merlot for luxurious mouthfeel. The fruit is hand picked and hand sorted, then kept in separate lots during fermentation and barrel aging. The resulting cabernet has an affinity for braised meats, grilled fish, hearty pastas, good books, fireplaces and summer evenings on the patio. - Winery

Robert Craig’s winemaking philosophy is that Cabernet Sauvignons should be made with minimal intervention, so that unique vineyard qualities are displayed in the finished wine. Distinguished by concentrated varietal character, appealing aromas and intense fruit flavors, these Cabernets are balanced, integrated and luscious upon release, while offering great potential for long-term aging. The Robert Craig Winery is located at 2300 atop Howell Mountain, overlooking Napa Valley. The winemaking regimen is undertaken with great care and attention to detail. Each vineyard block is monitored as harvest approaches to assure the proper degree of ripeness, and grapes are picked in small lots. Individual lots are processed separately during fermentation in order to maximize color and character development and closely manage the influence of tannin. Frequent pump-overs in early fermentation produce full extraction of the fruit while providing ripe, round tannins. This small-lot format expands the blending options, allowing for fine-tuning of the wine style. All Cabernets are aged in French oak barrels to gain added complexity. Read less

Good bright red-ruby. Inviting aromas and flavors of cassis, bitter cherry, mocha and fresh herbs. Sweet, dense and nicely concentrated, offering both a fine-grained texture and rather suave tannins. The long finish is firmed by a mineral component. This is much easier to taste today than the two “mountain wines” and is the top value in the portfolio this year.

An edge of dusty, loamy earth gives the currant, anise and cedar a drying edge, yet the finish lingers, and the flavors are pure and persistent. Drink now through 2024.

Complex and well-structured as always, Craig’s ’10 Affinity is a good followup to their ageable 2009. It’s dry, tannic and elegantly structured, with a firm minerality anchoring blackberry and plum fruit flavors. Don’t drink it now; give it until 2018 to let it begin to express itself.

A lean cabernet with scents of violets and blue fruit, this gains richness from its dark chocolate tannins. Hints of mint, black peppercorns and dark roast coffee add to the wine’s complexity. For lamb chops.

Tar, licorice, scorched earth and incense are some of the many notes that burst from the glass in Robert Craig’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Affinity. This is an especially dark, brooding wine loaded with character. The relatively large presence of Petit Verdot is felt in the wine’s baritone fruit and muscular personality. This is without question a highly intriguing wine, but it needs a few years for all the elements to harmonize. The 2010 is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec. Anticipated maturity: 2015–2025.
