Rivetto Barolo Serralunga 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Funkelndes Granatrot. Gutes Alterungspotential.

The Rivetto family began making wine in 1902 in Montaldo Scarampi, a small village located in the Asti region. In 1921 they decided to move to via Rattazzi in the old part of Alba, where they began a successful wine business. Nearly 40 years later, in 1939, Ercole, the family’s patriarch, secured the winery’s future when he purchased the Loirano estate from the Counts of Vassallo. The estate sits 400 metres above sea level, occupying 89 acres that face the spectacular Serralunga d’Alba Castle and the charmingly picturesque village of Sinio. The vineyards extended from the southwestward along the highest hilltop. The land has been prized for many generations. As a token of esteem and hospitality, the Falletti family, owners of the Langhe property, best owed upon their cousins, the Vassallo Counts, this rich land located in Loirano, a region synonymous with age-old quality. Sinio is home to ancient wine cellars producing the Dolcetto d’Alba, the Barbera d’Alba, the Nebbiolo d’Alba, the Barolo and the Barbaresco all of wich are consistendly controlled to guarantee a level of quality enriching with age. The methods of preparing the grapes are the result of four generations of wine making. Evolving technology combined with the region’s fertile soil and the wineyard’s mineral deposits work in perfect harmony. In the last decade, the Rivetto enterprise has steadily grown in diverse ways. The family has purchased some acres of vineyard land in Serralunga d’Alba, wich promises to extend their production. They have opened a shop in historic Piazza Garibaldi, located in Alba offering their delicious wines to the public. The estate has opened its doors to tourists; allowing wine lovers and nature enthusiasts to stroll the magnificent grounds; experiencing the fascinating and delicious customs unique to a century old tradition. I let this decant for 1 hour 15 minutes. Pours a deep crimson color with red hues on the edges. Scents of red and dark berries, vanilla and chocolate. Starts off with lots of dark cherries mixed in with sweet red cherries. In the middle, there are nice undertones of chocolate and vanilla that really add balance. On the back end, the dark cherry flavors are most prevalent but it still has the sweet nuances of vanilla and chocolate. This is a full bodied Barolo that is drinking well now but it could also use more cellaring. Leaves a rich taste on the palate that lasts quite a long time.

thin, astringent, hollow ... nice hints of flavor, but no fullness, no gumption. not worth $18, our local price. but it IS the barbaresco grape. guess beggars can't be choosers. miguel
