Riverby Estate Pinot Noir Marlborough 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The fruit for this pinot noir was all hand-picked from our estate vineyard with a yield of just 2.5 tonnes per acre. It is a blend of several clones, predominantly 115, 667 and 777, the oldest of which were planted some 15 years ago. The fruit was destemmed, cold soaked and then lightly pressed before spending just over 11 months in French oak, 40% new, and was bottled on 5 March 2008. This pinot has a lovely rich velvety ruby colour with beautiful floral aromas. Roses and violets, cherries and plums, bacon and mushrooms, all abound on the delightfully perfumed nose. On the palate it is a very clean elegant wine, beautifully textured with sweet berry fruit and lovely savoury characters. It has delightful balance and acidity with fine grained tannins and a lingering herbal finish. It promises to develop considerable complexity and charm given further bottle age

Riverby Estate derives its name from the tranquil Opawa River, which winds through the Marlborough Region of New Zealand The river's rich resources were invaluable to the local farmers as well as the source of their favourite meal; the Rainbow Trout. In the 1930s Opawa River was diverted to stop Blenheim from flooding and the landscape was changed forever. Its redirection inadvertently transformed Riverby Estate into one of New Zealand's finest wine growing properties. Riverby Estate now shows no sign of the Opawa, apart from the tales of longtime resident Peter Matthews, who relays the stories of his father Ellis catching trout where the river once flowed.
