Rimu Grove Pinot Noir Nelson 2004
Winemaker’s Notes Harvest date 15 – 30 April 2004 Sugars at harvest 23.0 – 25.8 Brix Bottling date 18 March 2005 Cases produced 664 Alcohol 14.0% pH 3.7 T/A 6.8 gm/litre 100% fruit from the Rimu Grove Estate Vineyard. Mix of seven clones: 10/5, UCD 5 & 6, 114, 115, 667, 777. Barrel aged in French oak for 10.5 months (35% new oak). Grapes were picked by hand and cold-soaked for 5 days. Wine was fermented in small open-top fermentation vats, hand-plunged 3 times daily. Wine was bottled course-filtered. Tasting Notes: Gorgeously plump, fleshy wine with a fine tannin balance. Delicate, sweet-fruit flavours, with raspberry and strawberry. Fine acidity and a lovely tail. A hint of funk which adds further intrigue. The wine combines a full body with a graceful balance and, although quite ready, will continue to develop complexity for several years.
One of the best wine's I tried in NZ, and probably the best Pinot Noir I also tried in this $40 price range. Full bodied, ranked as a five star Pinot Noir by critics in the area. Visited the Winery on a tour and it was the best Red of the day. Cheers to the owners. My year was 2006.
