What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

Winemakers Notes

"95 Spectator: Big, rich and juicy. Voluptuous. Aromas of caramel, apples and light tropical fruit. Full-bodied, round and very sweet with loads of ripe fruit and a long butterscotch and piecrust aftertaste. Viscous texture. Hard not to drink now. Wonderful sticky. Best after 2010. 6,250 cases made..(11/06) Decanter 5 Stars: Nose: a tight kernel of fresh, concentrated fruit, oranges and lemons. Taste: tightly coiled, concentrated ripe, candied fruit and a touch of honey - the sheer beauty of the wine stopped me in my tracks at this stage of the tasting! A great wine. Editorial Reviews

Lively on the nose with a big, creamy marshmallow and dried tropical fruit tone supported by background notes of sweetly spiced wood and roasted nuts. Big and creamy in the mouth with a touch of caramel dominating the dried pear fruits and background botrytis tones. A bit hollow on the midpalate but the caramel cream tones gain in intensity.
