Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Niederhauser Hermannshohle Donnhoff 96jg 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2010 Hermannshöhle Auslese is also brilliant in this vintage and one of the true superstars to be found at this Prädikat level in the Nahe this year. The hauntingly beautiful bouquet offers up a blazing blend of blood orange, pink grapefruit, oranges, glorious minerality, a touch of petrol, irises and orange blossoms in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, deep and very intensely flavored, with great focus, ripe, snappy acids, impeccable balance and a very, very, very long and racy finish. Just a brilliant bottle of Auslese in the making! 2018-2070...96" JG 4/11 "Smoky black tea wafts over quince preserves and almost overripe pear on the nose and the glossy, subtly creamy, yet bright palate of Donnhoff's 2010 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule. Nut paste and a savory smoked meat dimension contribute complexity to this lusciously lingering Auslese, but one that " like its Brucke counterpart' does not capture the dynamic spirit of the 2010 vintage to quite the extent of its Spatlese siblings, and would benefit (might well, in time) from a bit more focus. Still, this will impress regardless for at least two decades...93" WA #198 12/11

H. Dönnhoff:
A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. The estate, which is over 12 hectares in size, has been in the Dönnhoff family since 1750, and is currently run by Helmut Dönnhoff. The estate, which is over 12 hectares in size, has been in the Dönnhoff family since 1750, and is currently run by Helmut Dönnhoff. The Dönnhoffs own vines in only the top vineyards of the Nahe Valley. These vineyards are sited in several nearby villages, namely Niederhäuser (Hermannshöhle), Oberhauser (Brucke), Schloßböckelheimer (Felsenberg and Kupfergrube), and Norheimer (Kirschheck and Dellchen). The vineyards are principally slate or volcanic soil, and are planted with Riesling and also some Burgundian varieties. Read less
