Ridge has bottled zin from the Benito Dusi Ranch — planted in 1922 on the warm, gravelly hills south of the town of Paso Robles — since the 1967 vintage. In 2012, it’s a red with both raw power and surprising detail, the aromas oscillating between cured meat, black spice and brighter floral tones. The fruit feels full to the point of bursting, yet there’s sophistication to the structure, the tannins fine and mineral and alive — speaking to a resonant match of variety, site and soil amplified by vine age. It’s utterly Californian, a grand and sunny red to open when you’ve got a good enough reason to roast a whole lamb.

An old-school style, this is briary and full of zesty fruit, with aromas of bright cherry, grilled herb and fresh earth leading to smoky plum and cracked pepper flavors that linger toward ripe tannins. Drink now through 2020.

Winemaker's Notes:

“A slight candied/confectionary note on the nose does not properly prepare you for this wine. The moment this hits the palate, you’re struck by flashy yet elegant notes of black cherry, raspberry, ripe strawberry, and a hint of caramel. Baking spice and black tea notes frame the long finish. By no means inky or jammy, this has incredible finesse thanks to its vibrant acidity and polished tannins. This is a much lighter style of Zinfandel than what might be expected, and even at 14.8% ABV there is not a hint of alcohol burn. Long, persistent, and very easy to drink. This paired beautifully with Maine Sea Scallops with beet Bolognese, and should be a fantastic crowd-pleaser through 2020.” – Zachys Buying Team
