Notes on the Ridge Vineyards Geyserville Alexander Valey Zinfandel 2006 : CONNOISSEUR'S GUIDE REVIEW: 90 POINTS 70% Zinfandel; 18% Carignane; 10% Petite Sirah; 2% Mataro. It is usual for Ridge's Geyserville bottling to vie for top Zinfandel honors in every vintage, and, the 2006 version exhibits the depth and density and solid structure that we have come to expect. It hints at chocolate and a bit of raisiny fruit, and picks up an edge of tannin and heat at the end. It is, however, not fully in focus just yet, but given the ageworthy nature of its predecessors, it is likely to improve over read more...time and comes with a recommendation for a several years of cellaring. Connoisseur's Guide May 2008NVWE NOTES: This is yet another brilliant Geyserville bottling, with deep pomegranate syrup, red raspberry, spiced cherry, cinnamon, white pepper and vanilla scents in a vibrant, youthful mix. As expected, the flavors are beautifully focused and concentrated, as pomegranate, cherry, mineral, black tea and rich black pepper flavors fan-out through a long, sleek, polished, slightly lean finish. Although wonderfully balanced for food matching right now, it will certainly get better for three or four years and should easily live ten. A blend of 70% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane, 10% Petite Sirah and 2% Mataro.WINEMAKER NOTES: Winter rains continued into late March,sustaining the vines through summer. A full crop comparable to 2005 was thinned to intensify flavors. In September, as fog off the Pacific persisted, we dropped more clusters to eliminate damage to the fruit. Each parcel fermented separately on natural yeasts. Color and tannin extracted easily; we pressed at near-dryness after seven days. The uninoculated secondary finished within three weeks. Assemblage began October 10, when all the mixed-varietal parcels and one of petite sirah were combined. Based on further tastings, four zinfandel blocks were added, then two century-old carignane blocks for their opulence and complexity. At the end of June, a last rich, well-structured zinfandel lot completed assemblage. After fourteen months in barrel, the wine is fully integrated. Elegant tannins and intense fruit make it enjoyable now; it will be best over the next eight to ten years. Is this the Zin of the Vintage? Well no it can't be since it's only 70% Zinfandel but it is delicious with huge, brambly fruit tones on the nose with hints of dill, cocoa and creamy oak. The mouthfeel is lovely, youthful yet balanced if a bit chunky. There's a light layer of vanilla and spice laid over the blackberry, boysenberry fruit but it's all cut with a mineral vein and excellent top notes of spicy red berries, leather, and dried floral notes. Rich and still with some baby fat to lose, this none the less has all the parts to come together wonderfully. 91pts
