Editorial Reviews for Ridge Syrah Dry Creek Valley Lytton West Vineyard
A nose dominated by creamy vanilla oak, ash and leather shows faint hints of wild raspberry and dried strawberry fruit. On entry, this is smooth and seamless, a bit creamy and a touch soft for my palate, but it does deliver slow to build yet beautifully balanced flavors of plum, black cherry and a nice nutty accent. There is a lot of oak here, no doubt about that, and the oak tannins are a bit out of balance today, but this has the balance to age well for quite a long time. There’s a nice richness to the underlying fruit and already an emerging complexity accenting the plum, blueberry and boysenberry fruit on the back end. Elegant and finely balanced, though this needs 2-4 years for the wood to integrate. 89pts
This is tight and hard on the nose with some evergreen, balsamic tones that offer contrast to the core of hard candied blackberry fruit. Light on the palate and quite structured with dry tannins and bright acids. There is a core of sweet black raspberry fruit on the finish with a nice hint of coconut cream sweetness, but overall this is hard and ungenerous. 85pts
Wow this is fantastic from the get go. The nose is packed with sweet, candied fruit and is really very complex with notes of cedar, mint, shoe polish VA, wood, some animal tones and a lovely hint of brambly black fruit weaving in and out of the glass. On the palate this is smooth and rich, seamless with bright plummy fruits and cedary notes on the backend and onto the surprisingly long, and fairly complex finish that shows a lovely forest floor tone. Absolutely spectacular bottle of aged Zin a new benchmark for me! 93pts
User Reviews for Ridge Syrah Dry Creek Valley Lytton West Vineyard
Add your reviewMany moons ago a colleague sent 3 cases of this back home after touring wine country. I had never really heard of Zinfandel but became a fan, especially since the bottle was under $10 each. So, now we see the true measure of inflation. Every so often I splurge on this----alas it has almost priced itself out of my reach. I still associate Zin with Ridge after all the others I have tried. It is a class act, and hard to follow.
The nose showed red wild berries, a dusting of cinnamon sugar, hints of minerals and herbs, and a whiff of dark baker’s chocolate. On the palate, it was beautifully balanced and elegant with a firm start and juicy finish. Ripe red and blue fruits went from sweet to tart as it flowed across the palate. The finish was long and spicy. (92 points)
Very strong jammy plummy aromas. Some gamey meats and iron. Solid acidity on the palate with nice dark fruit components.
Very big nose--somewhat spicy, maybe something like berry preserves, some earth. Multidimension in the mouth. A little berry fruit on the tip of the tongue, but the initial impression is softness, not blockbuster Zin. Velvety smooth as it travels over the palate, but then with some tannin around the edges. Nice lingering finish. US$26.99 at Total Wines
On the nose, delightful notes of black cherry, tar and licorice that is a welcomed precursor to the taste. Just the right amount of fruit with a dash of pepper and a good amount of acidity and lip tickling tannins lead me to believe this wine will age well and be even more drinkable in ten years or more.
I've read many positive reviews for this wine across a number of wine blogs. My experience differs from the consensus and has me doubting my own connoisseurship. A flat, uncomplicated nose. But plenty of immediate zip on palate, bursting with plum tart cookie, strawberry and canned cranberry. All good and well but oakiness turns off the fruit almost immediately. Certainly not the vinyardian wizardry we've come to expect from Ridge. This wine may just need more time. Buy at your own peril.
On the nose, I found blackberry, sweet spice, whiffs of vanilla cream soda and powdered sugar. On the palate, it was rich yet balanced with juicy blackberry jam and nice structure. The finish is long as the fruit lingers on the palate for half a minute. I found myself on the ledge o scoring this 89 or 90, but in the end, I went with the former, because as good as this is, I felt it needed a little more complexity to break 90 points.

2010 Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs Dry Creek Zinfandel - USA - Region: California - Apellation: Sonoma - Zinfandel - 750 ml
Bright medium red. Red berries, rose petal and exotic spices on the nose. Then juicy, peppery and distinctly dry in the mouth, with a leanness to the red berry flavors. Finishes with dusty tannins and a building dryness.
A blend of ten vineyards with an emphasis on zinfandel, this wine includes small amounts of petit sirah, syrah, grenache and carignane. The 2007 vintage is dark and unevolved, carrying a lot of black fruit and the warmth of alcohol. It's a simple red to decant for fennel sausage.
An absolutely beautiful Zin, and a must-have for restaurant wine lists. It's pure and complex in blackberries, cherries, cola and mocha, with wonderful spices erupting all the way through, and the most elegant silky texture. What a great job.
A terrific blend from winemaker Paul Draper, this concoction of 50% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 15% Carignan, 11% Mourvedre, and 9% Grenache tips the scales at 14.1%. A California Rhone Valley look-alike, it boasts loads of raspberry, black cherry, and currant fruit, excellent density, and a sweet, glycerin-imbued mouthfeel offering charm, succulence, and loads of character. This medium to full-bodied, voluptuous, sexy red is ideal for drinking over the next 4-5 years.

Thrifty consumers will no doubt get a juicy charge from the 2004 three Valleys, a 15,000-case proprietary blend of 68% Zinfandel, 11% Carignane, 10% Syrah, and the rest Petite Sirah and Grenache. A pretty, elegant wine with lush raspberry and black cherry fruit, a seductive texture, medium body, 14.1% alcohol. and beautiful integration of acidity, wood, and tannin, it should drink well for 2-3 years.
Winemaker's Notes:
93+ points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): ...67% Zinfandel, 23% Petite Sirah, 7% Carignane and 3% Mataro... Firm tannins frame an expressive core of dark red cherries, flowers and sweet herbs. The inner perfume of Zinfandel resonates on the finish. The 2010 needs time to soften, but it is quite beautiful. Lytton Spring is a much larger site than Geyserville, the choices for lots are much greater, which affords the winemaking team a great deal of flexibility in crafting the final blends. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.
