This is tight and hard on the nose with some evergreen, balsamic tones that offer contrast to the core of hard candied blackberry fruit. Light on the palate and quite structured with dry tannins and bright acids. There is a core of sweet black raspberry fruit on the finish with a nice hint of coconut cream sweetness, but overall this is hard and ungenerous. 85pts

The nose showed a mix of raspberry and blueberry with a dusting of spice and the beginnings of tertiary development. On the palate it was medium-bodied, center focused and with gripping acidity. A mix of sweet crushed berries saturated the senses followed by minty notes. The finish showed an abundance of spice and tannin that clung to the palate.
Light for a sonoma Zin, but well balanced. While I like over the top fruit and in your face wines, this was very nice and approachable. Minerality on the nose with some dense prunes. Good food pairing wine, with good acidity. Decent tannins, that dont overpower the wine, but will allow it to age well. Chewy tannin on the finish and a touch of licorice, but not too much. Nice.
Savory herbs, sage, freshly baked berry pie, dark chocolate, wild berry fruit on the nose. Black, purple and bramble red berry fruit. Sweet candy tones on the palate. Some big alcohol with a cough syrup note. Stewed wild berry compote favors with some fig, plum, bitter chocolate and sweet, dried prune and berry flavors. Some coriander. Spice and both white and black pepper in moderation. Finishes on a Christmas candy note mixed with berry tart. I had to amend this as following the first taste, the wine quickly falls into a flabby, oxidized prune stew. The cork broke upon opening, so perhaps the oxidation had begun and opening it accelerated the process. Unfortunate. 3/16/12

Bright ruby-red. Complex, deeply pitched aromas of sappy blackberry, dark chocolate, game, leather and earth. Very full and ripe in the mouth, but with a captivating sappy quality. Flavors of dark berries, violet and spice are lifted by a peppery nuance. In a distinctly sweeter style, and more harmonious than usual at this stage of its evolution. Big, deep and impressively structured; finishes with substantial but ripe tannins. A superb showing.
Smooth, rich and polished, with a pretty array of black cherry, blackberry, raspberry and plum. Elegant, fruity aftertaste. Drink now through 2004.
The Lytton Springs Proprietary Red Wine (14.9% alcohol) exhibits a saturated purple color in addition to sumptuous aromas of truffles, licorice, loamy soil, blackberry liqueur, and cherries. There are layers of concentration, sweet glycerin in the mid-palate, and a blockbuster, concentrated, opulently-textured finish. It should drink well for six years.
Another Ridge classic, the deep ruby/purple-colored 1998 Litton Springs (14.3% alcohol; 77% zinfandel, 16% Petite Sirah, 4% Matero, 2% Carignan and 1% Alicante) boasts a sweet nose of briery fruit intermixed with red and black currants, minerals, pepper and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, with dried Provençal herb characteristics that emerge with airing, this fleshy, beautifully pure, and stunningly proportioned Zinfandel can be drunk now as well as over the next 5-6 years.
The 1996 Lytton Springs Red Wine (78% Zinfandel, 19% Petite Sirah, 2% Carignan and 1% Grenache) possesses 14.5% alcohol. It boasts the sweetest, jammiest nose, as well as a healthy dark ruby/purple color, full body, robust, chewy flavors, and the best length of these offerings. This expansively-flavored wine should drink well for 5-6 years.
A walk on the wild side, with earthy, funky sour cherry, tar and jammy notes. Offers plenty of depth, but the flavors keep you off balance. Best to cellar short term and keep your fingers crossed. Best form 2003 through 2008.

2006 Lytton Springs Vineyard, bottled April 2008 After long, hard rains in March, budbreak came by mid-April. In late July, extreme temperatures sunburned the west-facing blocks. These are planted predominantly to petite sirah, which took the highest loss. Veraison was late, and light rains further slowed maturation. We thinned the damaged clusters, and harvested the remaining fruit, fully ripe, between mid-September and mid-October. As tannin developed, we reduced pumpovers, and pressed at dryness on day nine. After read more... a natural malolactic, twenty of the thirty-four blocks were selected for the 2006. This classic Lytton Springs was barrel aged for a full fifteen months. Approachable now, it has the structure to be cellared and enjoyed over the next ten years.
