Food Pairings for Ridge Petite Sirah Dry Creek Valley Lytton Estate
Fairly spicy nose, also some woody notes. Very fruity, for a Lytton Springs, on the front of the palate--raspberry. Very noticeable tannin around the edges. Also some bitter notes at the back of the palate. An OK wine, but not what I normally expect from Lytton Springs.
Something of a sour viney nose. I'm not getting much fruit flavor on the palate at all. Super stark drying sensation, mostly. I may require more air. A bit bitter on the back of the palate. I like the lack of fruitiness, but you have to really like lean wines to enjoy this one. US$27.99 at Packing House Wine Merchants in Claremont. Amendment 6/6/2014: I am pleased to report that on Day 2, this wine had undergone significant changes. It is now much rounder and shows very nice blackberry fruit. I am upgrading my Snooth rating to 3-1/2 chalices. I have another bottle of this and look forward to trying it a few years from now.

External Reviews for Ridge Petite Sirah Dry Creek Valley Lytton Estate
The oldest petite sirah vines on our Lytton Estate were planted in 1901 and the youngest in 1998. We made our first wine from the property in 1972 and until 2002 when we bottled portions of the petite sirah as a separate wine for a limited release, it had always been included in the Lytton Springs Zinfandel.
Intense aromas of pepper, floral (lilys), vanilla and bacon fat. Focused blackberry fruit on the palate balanced by full but elegant tannins, firm acidity and a minerally finish.
Ridge 06 Zinfandel Lytton Springs After long, hard rains in March, budbreak came by mid-April. In late July, extreme temperatures sunburned the west-facing blocks. These are planted predominantly to petite sirah, which took the highest loss. Veraison was late, and light rains further slowed maturation. We thinned the damaged clusters, and harvested the remaining fruit, fully ripe, between mid-September and mid-October. As tannin developed, we reduced pumpovers, and pressed at dryness on day nine. After a natural malolactic, twenty of the thirty-four blocks were selected for the 2006. This classic Lytton Springs was barrel aged for a full fifteen months. Approachable now, it has the structure to be cellared and enjoyed over the next ten years. JO (1/08) Tasting Notes - July 2008 Nose: Intense black cherry, mint, vanilla, chapparal, pepper, tar and mineral notes. Palate: Sweet raspberry, plums, full, great depth with very elegant tannins, approachable but will soften and open up even more with age.
This old vines Petite Sirah, more concentrated and spicy flavors than Syrah, comes from vines that were planted as far back as 1901 and the youngest being planted in 1998. Lytton Estate is located in Dry Creek, Sonoma; which has become a highly regarded area for old vine Zinfandel, and is certainly a great area for this rare variety as well. This wine is remarkably disguised by good acidity and structure, exhibiting plenty of black fruits, forest floor, pepper, and spice notes. Ridge is a California pioneer that is respected around the world for their classical style of wines that express deep concentration with refined elegance.
