External Reviews for Ridge Paso Robles Zinfandel Benito Dusi Ranch
Medium red. Subtle red berry nose shows a suave, herbal aspect, with gentle mineral and baking spice qualities adding verve. Taut redcurrant and wild strawberry flavors offer impressive clarity, with silky tannins adding structure. This has pinot noir-like vivacity, spiciness and red fruit character, finishing with tangy grip and sneaky length. Is this ready for the modern zin world?
Bright red-ruby. High-toned nose combines blackberry, black raspberry, licorice and black pepper. Supersweet, intensely flavored and penetrating; wonderfully fleshy, chewy and seamless but given lift and shape by strong acidity. An intriguing zinfandel with lovely inner-mouth floral perfume. Finishes long and sweetly tannic.
Dark red. Superripe nose suggests Kahlua and raisin, along with a hint of herbs. Then creamy in the mouth, with superripe flavors of roasted fruits, mocha and cough syrup. The Kahlua and raisin notes return on the back end, suggesting that this zinfandel should be consumed in the short term.
Supple, graceful and smooth, with dill and lavender aromas and ripe plum, wild berry and blackberry jam flavors accented by a spicy, white pepper aroma. Wonderful balance, grace and harmony, with fine tannins. Drink now through 2008.
Ruby-red color. Expressive cherry-vanilla and dark berry preserve aromas are complicated by dark chocolate and dried flowers. Spicy dark berry and plum preserve flavors coat the palate and pick up an exotic apricot pit quality with aeration. Fleshy and smooth, with very good finishing sweetness and length. This is very seductive right now.
An outstanding effort, the 2001 Zinfandel Dusi Ranch (14.5% alcohol) displays loads of black cherry jam-like notes intertwined with pepper and underbrush. Dense, full-bodied, and peppery, with great fruit purity as well a presence, it should be enjoyed over the next 4-5 years.
The big (at least by Ridge standards) 2002 Zinfandel Dusi Ranch is a 100% Zinfandel that tips the scales at 14.8% alcohol. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose displaying an Amarone-like charcoal/creosote character intermixed with black fruit, barbecue spice, and smoky notes. This medium to full-bodied, dense, chunky, muscular, mouth-filling, teeth-staining Zin should be consumed over the next 5-7 years.
