Ridge Montebello 1999

Winemaker's Notes:

May/June 00 "Very saturatedruby. Captivating aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, grilled nuts, fresh herbs and flowers. Great density and sweetness;this wine's uncanny depth of flavor already suggests this will be a topMonte Bello vintage. Really remarkably full for a wine with 12.7%alcohol: this is routinely done by Chateau Latour in riper years butit's hard to imagine a North Coast cabernet pulling this off. Lovelyacids brighten the wine's black fruit and floral flavors and contributeto the impression of firm structure. Palate-staining, extremely longfinish features very fine tannins." 92-95 pointsMay/Jun '01 "Bright saturatedruby. Very subtle, deep aromas of cassis, blackberry, iodine, iron andbitter chocolate; if the 2000 smells like Margaux, this is morePauillac. Dense, bright and powerfully structured; thick but sharplydelineated. Intriguing notes of leather and bitter chocolate. Firmacids and tannins contribute to the impression of backbone. But thetannins of the 2000 are even sweeter." 91-93 pointsMay/Jun 02 "Bright ruby-red.Vibrant aromas of boysenberry, iron and mocha. Dense but tightly woundand not overly sweet; has a silky texture despite possessing a strongacid spine. Finishes with palate-cleansing acids and a late spicycharacter. This very young wine will need a good decade of cellaring, but even today there are no rough edges." 92(+?) points~By Stephen Tanzer, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine CellarAwine of great balance, finesse and grace. Well-focused, the ripe, tart, rich blackberry and currant fruit is intense yet elegant, picking upearth, mineral and sage notes, and finishing with fine, well-integratedtannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.Drink now through 2012. 5,679 cases made. Score: 92
