Ridge Central Coast Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

The vintage was very kind to hillside wines. The heat provided as much ripeness as necessary to fully ripen tannin while the elevation helped circumvent the extremes of the strongest temperature spikes. This true ripeness manifests itself in a saturated black/garnet hue with opening notes of classic Cab character: scorched earth, blueberries, sweet tobacco and black currants. There's a sweetness to the nose that follows through on the palate with more red, blue and black fruit flavors, sweet cream, pain grille and cassis. The structure of the site comes up only in the very end to help prolong the finish and give focus to the perfectly round fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon (79%), Syrah (11%), Petit verdot (4%), Cabernet franc (3%) Malbec (2%), Merlot (1%)

Deep ruby color. Lively aromas of black raspberry, red licorice, redcurrant, mocha, tobacco and game. Quite dense and intensely flavored, but very firm and unevolved, with strong acids and a medicinal, inky austerity. Chewy tannins are very strong bu... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1998 Ridge Monte Bello 750ml

Wine Spectator ReviewDark, with a tight focus on the ripe blackberry and black cherry-?scented fruit. Concentrated and complex, not a classic, but very well-done for the vintage, offering depth and length. Finishes with a tart edge. Drink now through 2007.
