Ricard le Petiot Touraine 2009
Vincent Ricard isn't just on the list of the top winemakers in Touraine, he also deserves discussion when the conversation turns to the best in all of the Loire Valley. But Ricard stands out most prominently in the oft-neglected region of Touraine for his willingness to limit yields and treat his vines with meticulous care. The results of such practices as manual removal of weeds from the foot of each plant and strict avoidance of chemical herbicides and pesticides are readily apparent in Ricard's wines. These are fresh, concentrated, striking Sauvignon Blancs that can stand up against all the top stars of the Loire.
This is the kind of wine that made me fall in love with the old world. A Sauvignon blanc that is softer, with a delicate mix of herbaceousness and citrus. There is just enough of a minerally, acidic quality on the finish to make it refreshing, but not so much that it becomes bracing and harsh.
