Rh Phillips Merlot Toasted Head 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Our North Coast Merlot is produced primarily from grapes grown in carefully selected Mendocino, Lake, and Sonoma County vineyards. The temperate, marine-influenced microclimates of these regions allow Merlot grapes to ripen slowly and evenly throughout the growing season, developing concentrated varietal flavors balanced by supple tannins and bright acidity. Winemaking After the grapes are crushed and destemmed, we cold-soak the juice at 55ºF for 24 hours before inoculating the juice with a cultured yeast strain to instigate fermentation. The juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks at 85ºF. for 7 to 10 days to fully extract color and flavor, before undergoing a secondary malolactic fermentation to soften acidity. The wine is aged 14 months in 59-gallon French and American oak barrels, 20% new, which softens and enriches its texture, adding a pleasing, toasted vanilla tone to its rich cherry and berry flavors. Winemaker's Note Our Merlot displays fragrant plum, cherry, and blackberry fruit aromas, with complementary scents of fresh herbs, vanilla, coffee, and toasted oak adding complexity. Medium-bodied and firmly structured on the palate, its fine depth of fruit and supple tannins make it both delightful on its own and a delicious accompaniment to food.

Really liked this wine. Subtle tones and great finish. It went perfect with sweet Italian sausage and pasta with red sauce. It was to much for steak though. Kind of cancelled out the taste.

Taste Complex aromas and flavors of bright cherry, roasted coffee and vanilla, with hints of dried herbs and spice. Tannins are firm.
