Rex Hill Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

Bright red fruit, cherry cola, butterscotch, boysenberries, rosemary & brown sugar. This wine is friendly with a capital ‘F’. Oodles of fruit compliment a modestly structured wine, with firm acidity. Hints of port and cherry liqueur. Generous on the palate and inviting on the nose, this wine makes for good company on a rainy winters evening. There is plenty of freshness & yet sophistication to allow it to age gracefully. The oak profile is subtle & well-integrated. Pair with duck.

Raspberry seed and strawberry jam aromas with full cherry notes and a gentle cedar character with baking spice. Herbal cherry and red currant on the palate with deep, rich flavors of red berry, strawberry and red currant, a floral expression of freshly picked blossom, tart cranberry on the mid palate and a finish of creamy textured earth. 90 pts

Slight, alcoholic and young. Based on others' high praise, I'm thinking this is one for saving.

Tasting Notes: The 2014 REX HILL Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a dark ruby red color with striking clarity and depth. Primary aromas of plum, black cherry, blueberries, tobacco, violets, lilacs, iris and wet stone lead. Over time, notes of cassis, thyme, iron, clean earth (sous bois) and wild strawberries (fraise de bois) deepen and add complexity to the initial bouquet. On the palate, the attack is focused and pure with a transparency that belies the intensity of the vintage. Flavors like cherries, cassis, flowers and smoke echo the aromas. Structured with ripe tannins and good acidity, the 2014 REX HILL Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a classic example of Oregon Pinot Noir from a vintage that gave us real density on the palate with bright fruit flavors and purity. The wine has the intensity, balance and concentration to age and become more complex over the next 15 to 20 years. Aging: Aged 10 months in French Oak Acid: 5.6 g/L pH: 3.58 Alcohol: 13.5%

Tasting Notes: Aromas of violets, iris, ripe raspberries, dark cherries, rose, blueberries, wild strawberries and wet stones all emerge from the glass when the wine is first poured. As the wine opens, more savory aromas of wood smoke, cured tobacco, earth, sandalwood and cinnamon add complexity to the original aromatics. Structured, ripe and pure, the wine shows all hallmarks of the 2013 vintage.

Tart-edged, smoke-tinged red currant and sour cherry characterize the sappy, bright Rex Hill basic Willamette Valley 2010 Pinot Noir, no doubt reflecting an increasing tendency to favor Eola and Amity Hills fruit in this cuvée (although all of the Willamette sub-AVAs are represented). Relatively full for its vintage, this nonetheless finishes with a welcome ping that mildly invigorates and invites the next sip. I would plan to enjoy this over the next 2–3 years.

Fresh and focused, with nice transparency to the blackberry, licorice and floral flavors, lingering enticingly on the deft finish. Drink now through 2018.

The palate intrigues with red, blue and black fruit flavors, appealin spice and minerals framed by delicate, ripe tannins. The wine's structure builds gradually through the mid-palate reflecting its intensity balance and potential for longevity.
