Renwood Zin Amador Old VI 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes Our Amador Ice Zinfandel begins with aromas of strawberries, watermelon and cherries. In the mouth, the wine has richness, complexity, balance and lushness. A superb balance of acidity and sweetness allows the finish to linger. A small amount of Syrah Rose was added to round out the wine and add touch of color. One of the most unique dessert wines in the world. Enjoy this wine as an aperitif, or at the conclusion of a memorable meal with your favorite dessert.

Surrounded by some of America’s oldest Zinfandel vineyards, Renwood Winery is located in the picturesque California foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Renwood produces world-class award winning wines from Amador County and the Sierra Foothills. Boston native Robert Smerling founded Renwood in 1993. Mr. Smerling fell in love with Amador County’s rich history and magnificent vineyards. A plan was set in place to build one of America’s premier Zinfandel wineries. Mr. Smerling brought together a group of professional investors who helped him found the company. Wine production has grown from 2,500 cases in 1993 to over 100,000 cases today. The critics all agree Renwood produces consistently exceptional wines covering the spectrum from big, bold, jammy Zins to wonderfully balanced Syrahs and Barberas. Today we produce over 18 different wines, including 2 Proprietary wines, 3 Vineyard Designated wines, 6 Amador County wines, 4 Red Label wines and 3 Dessert wines. With the introduction of our Red Label Series from our younger vines, Renwood has entered a new phase in its development. We are able to provide quality wine at reasonable prices to the wine by-the-glass trade and major floor displays in supermarkets and large retailers throughout the country. As part of the continuing expansion, Renwood acquired Santino Winery in 1995. Today, we have 50,000 square feet of production space in Plymouth. In addition to the Plymouth site, we have an Ione facility with 15,000 square feet of production space. Our Tasting Room and Hospitality Center are open daily from 10:30 to 5:30. Last year, Renwood entertained 40,000 visitors at our Tasting Room. You can find Renwood wines in all 50 states and 16 foreign countries. Renwood has been featured in Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Food & Wine Magazine, Touring & Tasting, Decanter, and many other magazines. Renwood has been awarded top medals at world wine competitions including California State Fair, Los Angeles County Fair, San Francisco International Wine Competition, Hilton Head Wine Festival, Atlanta Wine Challenge and many more worldwide. Our flagship wine, Renwood Grandpère® Zinfandel comes from the oldest clone of Zinfandel in America dating back to the 1860’s. This unique wine has won worldwide acclaim, as Americas most loved Zinfandel! For more information, visit our website at www.renwood.com Read less

The color is somewhat lighter than your typical Lodi Zin with a certain amount of opacity. The nose is rich in fruit, with sweet ripe berries intermingled with cherries and plums, balanced by a bit of dusty spice. The taste is surprisingly not as fruit forward as I would have expected, in fact it's like a delayed fuse as the first taste seems to be dominated by smoke, cedar and some spice, then an explosion of fruit midpalate, with rich plum and blackberries, fading into some peppery spice note on the finish. The tannins are pretty big in this wine, supporting a very tight, dry finish. This wine is a bit high in alcohol at 16%, but you'd never know it from the aroma or taste (I suppose that can be a good thing!).
