Renwood Sierra Series Zinfandel Ultimate Wine Shop 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

The Fiddletown Zinfandel exhibits ripe blackberry jam, cherry, plum and white pepper aromas. The entry is soft with savory red fruit flavors that are lush and vibrant on the palate. The abundant layers of fruit in the middle produce a balanced wine, which finishes with a little spiciness and wonderfull toasty vanilla notes. The wine is a great expression of the Fiddletown appellation.

Surrounded by some of America’s oldest Zinfandel vineyards, Renwood Winery is located in the picturesque California foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Renwood produces world-class award winning wines from Amador County and the Sierra Foothills. Boston native Robert Smerling founded Renwood in 1993. Mr. Smerling fell in love with Amador County’s rich history and magnificent vineyards. A plan was set in place to build one of America’s premier Zinfandel wineries. Mr. Smerling brought together a group of professional investors who helped him found the company. Wine production has grown from 2,500 cases in 1993 to over 100,000 cases today. The critics all agree Renwood produces consistently exceptional wines covering the spectrum from big, bold, jammy Zins to wonderfully balanced Syrahs and Barberas. Today we produce over 18 different wines, including 2 Proprietary wines, 3 Vineyard Designated wines, 6 Amador County wines, 4 Red Label wines and 3 Dessert wines. With the introduction of our Red Label Series from our younger vines, Renwood has entered a new phase in its development. We are able to provide quality wine at reasonable prices to the wine by-the-glass trade and major floor displays in supermarkets and large retailers throughout the country. As part of the continuing expansion, Renwood acquired Santino Winery in 1995. Today, we have 50,000 square feet of production space in Plymouth. In addition to the Plymouth site, we have an Ione facility with 15,000 square feet of production space. Our Tasting Room and Hospitality Center are open daily from 10:30 to 5:30. Last year, Renwood entertained 40,000 visitors at our Tasting Room. You can find Renwood wines in all 50 states and 16 foreign countries. Renwood has been featured in Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Food & Wine Magazine, Touring & Tasting, Decanter, and many other magazines. Renwood has been awarded top medals at world wine competitions including California State Fair, Los Angeles County Fair, San Francisco International Wine Competition, Hilton Head Wine Festival, Atlanta Wine Challenge and many more worldwide. Our flagship wine, Renwood Grandpère® Zinfandel comes from the oldest clone of Zinfandel in America dating back to the 1860’s. This unique wine has won worldwide acclaim, as Americas most loved Zinfandel! For more information, visit our website at www.renwood.com Read less

2006 Renwood Zinfandel – Sierra Foothills (13.5%) – Color: slightly pale ruby, Nose: not much, Taste: a bit thin in the mouth, raspberries, light to medium tannins, short finish, not particularly memorable Lamarr: C- (not much going on here, can drink, may give to someone who doesn’t know much about wine, would not get again) Hector: C (not smoky, not jammy, nothing that I look for in a Zin)

Tasted at 2223 Market St, St on 10/16/10. Very cherry for a zin; maybe a bit on the sweet side. 15% alcohol. Friendly wine, leggy, syrupy. Not a traditional zin...I suspect it's been blended with something. Beautiful color but not the typical zin color (like Seghesio or Rosenblum)

A big, galloping Zin, the kind that intense mountain sunshine has ripened to perfection. It's huge in cherry, blackberry, sweet rhubarb and root beer flavors, and with gutsy tannins. Big in alcohol, too.

Pushes ripeness to the edge, with dried raspberry, dried black cherry and apricot flavors intermingled with vanilla, dill, firm tannins and hefty alcohol. Drink now through 2005.

With a touch of raisins in the finish, this is a nice example of a Foothills Zin. It's ripe, alcoholic, dry and rich, with Zinny flavors wrapped in sturdy but accessible tannins. There's a long finish of black cherries and cocoa.

Has a bouquet of brown sugar, caramel, sage, eucalyptus and dark berry fruit. The flavor is a blend of warm blackberries with a hint of dried fruit, finishing with sweet, fleshy tannins.

Rustic, intense and firmly structured, with dried raspberry, tar, white pepper, plum and spice notes. Concentration lingers, along with tart, tangy acidity. Drink now through 2006.
