What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

Deep ruby in color. The bouquet consists of brown sugar caramel sage eucalyptus and bursting with dark berry fruit. The flavor is a sumptuous blend of warm blackberries on the forward with a hint of dried fruit finishing with sweet fleshy tannins.

Reviews

A great zin, a lot of spice and great complexity. I never knew that they had such great wines in Amador County.

We approached this wine with a hint of apprehension because of the 15.5% alcohol content. We expected this wine to be overripe and raisiney, but were pleasantly surprised. I was just a bit ripe, but the ripe aromas enhanced rather than detracted from the overall experience. The eucalyptus in the nose offset the fruit which we characterized as strawberry and currants. No tannins, the wine is peaking.

The 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel is comprised of the best selection of Renwood's Old Vinevineyard lots, each adding its own nuance and complexity to thefinal blend. The 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel is dark ruby in color. The bouquetconsists of cranberry, allspice, nutmeg and blackberry compote. The flavorhas ripe berry fruit on the entry, following with the medley of holiday spices, and finishing with chalky tannins and the vanilla bean from the Americanoak.

The 2004 Sierra Foothills Zinfandel displays aromas of red fruit, berry andcracked pepper. The entry is fresh fruit and vanilla flavors that carry throughthe mid-palate, finishing with a lingering finish and a smoky/toasty oak ending. This Claret style Zinfandel is smooth and luscious.
