Renwood Grandpere Zinfandel Sierra Foothills. California 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Winemaker's Notes The 2004 Syrah displays aromas of Blueberry, Cranberry and Sage. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and rich. The fruit flavors mingle with the toast and vanilla from the oak barrels. A spicy finish and a good structure help round out the tasting experience. This is a great wine from one of the best vintages in the Sierra Foothills of the new millennium. Vintage The growing season of 2004 offered very warm springtime conditions. The warm temperatures advanced bud break by approximately three weeks, which gave the vines quite a head start for the season. The warm spring conditions led directly into summer time heat as temperatures were above normal in June and July. Essentially the vines went from winter to summer to fall in record time and harvest began in mid August and was over by the end of September. The heat combined with a smallish crop load gave excellent sugars but not much hang time. Ripe and heady, the grapes were so super concentrated and powerful that they practically jumped from the bin into the tanks. Fermentation and Aging Grapes were sourced from five different Syrah vineyards. Each lot was fermented separately in stainless steel tanks providing maximum extraction of fruit and color, with an extremely rich mouthfeel. The lots were then aged for 17 months in a blend of New and Old American oak and French oak offering a well integrated compliment of toasty oak that will remain subtle. This extended barrel age will help smooth out the firm tannins from this vintage. We felt that the addition of some Zinfandel and a bit of the white wine Viognier really gives this wine some punch and lifted the wine aromatically. Oak: American and French oak

Surrounded by some of America’s oldest Zinfandel vineyards, Renwood Winery is located in the picturesque California foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Renwood produces world-class award winning wines from Amador County and the Sierra Foothills. Boston native Robert Smerling founded Renwood in 1993. Mr. Smerling fell in love with Amador County’s rich history and magnificent vineyards. A plan was set in place to build one of America’s premier Zinfandel wineries. Mr. Smerling brought together a group of professional investors who helped him found the company. Wine production has grown from 2,500 cases in 1993 to over 100,000 cases today. The critics all agree Renwood produces consistently exceptional wines covering the spectrum from big, bold, jammy Zins to wonderfully balanced Syrahs and Barberas. Today we produce over 18 different wines, including 2 Proprietary wines, 3 Vineyard Designated wines, 6 Amador County wines, 4 Red Label wines and 3 Dessert wines. With the introduction of our Red Label Series from our younger vines, Renwood has entered a new phase in its development. We are able to provide quality wine at reasonable prices to the wine by-the-glass trade and major floor displays in supermarkets and large retailers throughout the country. As part of the continuing expansion, Renwood acquired Santino Winery in 1995. Today, we have 50,000 square feet of production space in Plymouth. In addition to the Plymouth site, we have an Ione facility with 15,000 square feet of production space. Our Tasting Room and Hospitality Center are open daily from 10:30 to 5:30. Last year, Renwood entertained 40,000 visitors at our Tasting Room. You can find Renwood wines in all 50 states and 16 foreign countries. A great zin, a lot of spice and great complexity. I never knew that they had such great wines in Amador County.

We approached this wine with a hint of apprehension because of the 15.5% alcohol content. We expected this wine to be overripe and raisiney, but were pleasantly surprised. I was just a bit ripe, but the ripe aromas enhanced rather than detracted from the overall experience. The eucalyptus in the nose offset the fruit which we characterized as strawberry and currants. No tannins, the wine is peaking.

I find that most zinfandels do not age well. This is no exception. It's 2012 as I'm writing this and the 2004 is probably 3 years past its prime. The nose was somewhat promising with smoke, plum and clove. A bit too much smoke for me but I've found that Renwoods are generally very smokey zinfindels, even at their peak. The palate is where the wine shows its age. Again, heavy smoke flavor profile overwhelmes and there are some bright cherry notes and even a little hint of coffee, but the wine seems a tad "watered down". It lacks that "oomph" that even a moderately good zin will show at least a little of. The finish has some length but is weak. In the end, it's drinkable now but won't last much longer. I'll give it 2.5 glasses with the acknowledgment that it was probably worthy of at least a full glass more in the rating if I had tried it 4 years ago. If you're sitting on a bottle of this in your cellar, crack it open before it's too late.

Juicy and appealingly rustic, with bright, briary black cherry, white pepper and meat aromas and dried blackberry and licorice flavors that firm up on the finish. Best from 2008 through 2012.

The 2004 Zinfandel Fiddletown (with 15% alcohol) reveals a seductive, soft style, loads of sweet kirsch and raspberry characteristics, a dark ruby/purple color, medium to full body, terrific fruit intensity, and a spicy, pure finish. Consume it over the next 3ndash;4 years.

Wine Tasting NotesThe Renwood Grandpere Zinfandel is a deep ruby purple with heady aromas of blackberry, coffee, cracked pepper, and spice. On the palate it displays ripe and dense tannins with black cherry, plum and anise flavors that finish long, lush and balanced with a hint of oak. A wine that you can enjoy now or age for 4 to 8 years.
