Renwood Grandpere Zin 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Winemaker's Notes The 2005 Sierra Foothills Zinfandel displays aromas of cherry, plums and nutmeg. The flavors mirror the aromas and give the wine a fresh fruit flavor with a spicy aftertaste. This lighter of Sierra Foothills Zinfandel is smooth and luscious. Vintage The growing season of 2005 started out with a normal spring but the record winter and spring rainfall gave plenty of early growth. A hot early summer continued the growth and berry development and a large crop was the result. The weather remained dry throughout the harvest, resulting in perfect fruit condition. Fermentation and Aging The lots we select each vintage are usually from younger vines and the lots that are lighter in body and structure. Each vineyard lot was fermented individually at moderate temperatures. Pressed at dryness, some wines remained in tank and some were racked directly into barrels for aging. The barrel lots were aged in combination French and American oak barrels for 10 months. The wines from our rigorous tasting selection were carefully blended together to produce a wine of exceptional value.

Surrounded by some of America’s oldest Zinfandel vineyards, Renwood Winery is located in the picturesque California foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Renwood produces world-class award winning wines from Amador County and the Sierra Foothills. Boston native Robert Smerling founded Renwood in 1993. Mr. Smerling fell in love with Amador County’s rich history and magnificent vineyards. A plan was set in place to build one of America’s premier Zinfandel wineries. Mr. Smerling brought together a group of professional investors who helped him found the company. Wine production has grown from 2,500 cases in 1993 to over 100,000 cases today. The critics all agree Renwood produces consistently exceptional wines covering the spectrum from big, bold, jammy Zins to wonderfully balanced Syrahs and Barberas. Today we produce over 18 different wines, including 2 Proprietary wines, 3 Vineyard Designated wines, 6 Amador County wines, 4 Red Label wines and 3 Dessert wines. With the introduction of our Red Label Series from our younger vines, Renwood has entered a new phase in its development. We are able to provide quality wine at reasonable prices to the wine by-the-glass trade and major floor displays in supermarkets and large retailers throughout the country. As part of the continuing expansion, Renwood acquired Santino Winery in 1995. Today, we have 50,000 square feet of production space in Plymouth. In addition to the Plymouth site, we have an Ione facility with 15,000 square feet of production space. Our Tasting Room and Hospitality Center are open daily from 10:30 to 5:30. Last year, Renwood entertained 40,000 visitors at our Tasting Room. You can find Renwood wines in all 50 states and 16 foreign countries. Renwood has been featured in Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Food & Wine Magazine, Touring & Tasting, Decanter, and many other magazines. Renwood has been awarded top medals at world wine competitions including California State Fair, Los Angeles County Fair, San Francisco International Wine Competition, Hilton Head Wine Festival, Atlanta Wine Challenge and many more worldwide. Our flagship wine, Renwood Grandpère® Zinfandel comes from the oldest clone of Zinfandel in America dating back to the 1860’s. This unique wine has won worldwide acclaim, as Americas most loved Zinfandel! For more information, visit our website at www.renwood.com Read less

Definite amador Zin. Old style and jammy.Deep purple. The bouquet was initially intense and slowly faded. Lot of licorice and assorted berrys on the nose. On the palate black pepper and very tart berrys with hint of cherry and plum. Tannins did not grab you. Seems like they were fading. the finish was good and almost all the fruit stayed with you for a while.

Smoky on the nose with nice dark cherry notes. Great midpalate with cherry/vanilla and dark chocolate. Pepper on the finish, which is long and pleasant. Great zin.

Ripe plum, dark chocolate, hints of cardamom and sagebrush in the wonderful nose, with undertones of printer's ink and tobacco. The taste is full, yet still a bit focused. A verdant character comes through, and a hint of caramelized sugar with lovely plum and cherry and spice, a bit of black pepper. Not a sophisticated profile, but a delicious one. Slightly astringent finish, leaving the palate ready for another quaff. This is my fifth bottle, and each has been delicious, and still surprisingly youthful. A couple more years in the cellar won't hurt this one a bit. Drink with assertive but not acidic foods. Great with grilled pork loin, fabada, ribs.

4/1/10 The Grocery Outlet has this wine for 4$ @btle. Unreal. Typical big zin nose, mouth filling fruit with a slight touch of bitterness on finish. That may soften if decanted. But the price cannot be beaten!

Wine Tasting NotesThe Sierra Foothills Zinfandel displays aromas of red fruit, berry and cracked pepper. The entry is fresh fruit and vanilla flavors that carry through the mid-palate, finishing with a lingering finish and a smoky/toasty oak ending. This Claret style Zinfandel is smooth and luscious.

Wine Tasting NotesThe Old Vine Zinfandel is deep ruby in color. The bouquet consists of brown sugar, caramel, sage, eucalyptus and bursting with dark berry fruit. The flavor is a sumptuous blend of warm blackberries on the forward, with a hint of dried fruit, finishing with sweet fleshy tannins.

Wine Tasting NotesThe Grandmere Zinfandel is a light garnet red with slight brick tones on the edge. The aroma of this wine welcomes the drinker with its soft, yet complex fruit. Raspberry and clove mid-palate essences balance the wine as it finishes with a rich texture of vanilla and caramel. The elegant, soft round tannin structure is built for a lasting finish.
