Renwood Grandpere 2004

Winemaker's Notes The 2004 Syrah displays aromas of Blueberry, Cranberry and Sage. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and rich. The fruit flavors mingle with the toast and vanilla from the oak barrels. A spicy finish and a good structure help round out the tasting experience. This is a great wine from one of the best vintages in the Sierra Foothills of the new millennium. Vintage The growing season of 2004 offered very warm springtime conditions. The warm temperatures advanced bud break by approximately three weeks, which gave the vines quite a head start for the season. The warm spring conditions led directly into summer time heat as temperatures were above normal in June and July. Essentially the vines went from winter to summer to fall in record time and harvest began in mid August and was over by the end of September. The heat combined with a smallish crop load gave excellent sugars but not much hang time. Ripe and heady, the grapes were so super concentrated and powerful that they practically jumped from the bin into the tanks. Fermentation and Aging Grapes were sourced from five different Syrah vineyards. Each lot was fermented separately in stainless steel tanks providing maximum extraction of fruit and color, with an extremely rich mouthfeel. The lots were then aged for 17 months in a blend of New and Old American oak and French oak offering a well integrated compliment of toasty oak that will remain subtle. This extended barrel age will help smooth out the firm tannins from this vintage. We felt that the addition of some Zinfandel and a bit of the white wine Viognier really gives this wine some punch and lifted the wine aromatically. Oak: American and French oak

Mr. Smerling brought together a group of professional investors who helped him found the company. Wine production has grown from 2,500 cases in 1993 to over 100,000 cases today. Wine Tasting NotesThe Jack Rabbit Flat Zinfandel is a dark ruby color that offers powerful jammy fruit characters of blackberry, cherry and plum with peppercorn and black pepper. On the palate, aromas of berry fruit and flavors of blackberry jam, cherry, white pepper, cocoa, mocha and blueberry that linger through the finish. This wine finishes with vanilla and hints of cedar and oak.
