Renard Unti Vineyard Grenache 2005
The single biggest problem with this wine is the mere 100 cases I was able to produce from the two long rows of this cobbly, well- drained site. There is a fair amount of Grenache planted in California, but it is mostly an insipid, high producing clone. Not in this vineyard. In the well thought out Unti vineyard, they made a clonal selection from Beaucastel and Alban. George Unti and his daughter Julie work diligently to produce this low yielding, one cluster per shoot, Grenache vineyard. The aromas are at once as upfront and obvious as Pamela Anderson - full of succulent, ripe strawberries; then as nuanced as Catherine Deneuve, with subtle floral notes and Chinese spices that beckon you back to the glass... or wherever your imagination takes you. Likewise, the palate leads you into two alternate universes: one of full throttle, lush, ripe fruit and bright acidity, the other of tar/tobacco, black pepper and allspice.
