Remelluri Rioja Reserva 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

92 points Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate): Not far off from the phenomenal 2010, the 2011 Reserva was cropped from a much warmer and riper vintage and it shows. This is the cuvée that represents the house style and wants to showcase the landscape of their estate, blending grapes from their 108 hectares of vineyards located at altitudes ranging from 550 to 800 meters altitude, with vines aged between 35 and 80 years. It's mostly Tempranillo with some Garnacha and Graciano, fermented with natural yeasts and aged in barrel for some 16 months before being bottled. There are aromas of damson plums and plenty of spices, quite ripe and heady, a little cooked. The palate is lush and round with abundant, dusty tannins. This is a powerful vintage. Drink: 2016-2020. (Aug 2016)

Vintage: 2010 05/29/2018

The Remelluri estate’s origins date back to the 14th century when monks from the Toloño monastery founded a sanctuary and farm at the site. The monks later abandoned the site but local hermits continued to maintain the shrine while the Real Divisa, a local community organization, maintained the farms to accommodate the needs of pilgrims who came to pray at the sanctuary. The estate eventually was spilt up and sold. The modern winery was established in 1967 when Jaime Rodríguez Salis purchased the vineyards at the heart of the former estate. Since then Remelluri has been devoted to recovering the old lands of this historic site and restoring the original vineyards. Remelluri’s vineyards are located along the slopes of the Sierra de Toloño mountains in the valleys of Valderemelluri, La Granja and Villaescusa. The vineyards here are at the highest elevation in the region, south-facing and protected from the prevailing winds and frost. It is the unique microclimate of this area that give the wines of Remelluri their personality. All of the grapes for the Remelluri were hand selected in the vineyard and transported in 20kg boxes. After further review of the grape in the winery, the wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts. It was then aged for 17 months in a combination of oak barrels in various sizes and ages. - Winery ** Only 1 in Stock **

Vintage: 2008 05/30/2013

Before broaching present releases, The 2008 Reserva will be the final vintage blended from grapes sourced outside Remelluri's boundaries. Perhaps my score is parsimonious, but intuition tells me that great Reservas in the mold of the 1976 lie in the years ahead. It has a well-defined nose of blackberry leaf, mint, bay leaf and balsamic that would benefit from a little more tension. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp acidity and a lovely, smoke and dried herb-tinged finish with a dash of black pepper. This is quite a "serious" Rioja that needs a little more joie-de-vivre. Drink 2014-2024.
