Reichsgraf Von Kesselstatt Riesling Spätlese Scharzhofberger 2007

Member Review by steve16046:

Pours a bright deep golden color. Nice aromas of honey dew, melon, citrus and vanilla. Starts off with a nice 'sweet' taste of melons and honeydew. In the middle there are some mild undertoens of citrus and vanilla. Finishes with more melon and citrus flavors. A nice medium bodied wine that could have used a tad more acidity (maybe opened too late?). Overall, quite enjoyable!

For years, Annegret and Gerhard Gartner have created a nearly perfect harmony between their personal and professional lives – something only a few married couples succeed in doing. Not only are they inseparable from one another, but also from their work. It comes as no surprise – nearly everything revolves around food and wine. The wines are uncompromisingly and consistently subject to the highest quality standards. This commitment has earned the estate recognition and respect, and has been confirmed by many prizes and awards by leadinging publications, such as the German gourmet magazine Feinschmecker, the critical wine guide Gault Millau, and the American wine magazine Wine Spectator (including vintner of the year) – to name but a few. Weingut Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt is more than 650 years old and thus, one of the most historical estates in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region. In 1978, the Günther Reh family acquired the estate from the Reichsgrafen (imperial counts) of Kesselstatt. Today, Annegret Reh-Gartner and her husband Gerhard Gartner carry on this Riesling tradition. In 1999, headquarters moved from Palais Keselstatt in Trier to Schloss Marienlay in the Ruwer Valley. Here, optimal conditions were created for producing Riesling wines that are on a par with the finest wines of the world. No other wine estate in Germany has such an unusually broad spectrum of top vineyards in all three river valleys of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region. They are sites that number among the best white wine vineyards of the world. The estate owns 36 hectares (89 acres) of vines, all of which are on steep slopes. All work in the vineyards is exclusively done by hand. The estate’s guiding principle: the quality of the terroir should be reflected in a wine. Read less

Visually modestly yellow that starts off with a fairly muted nose - fairly typical riesling sweet-apple smells with a green/vegetable hint that definitely does not match what hides beneath. From the nose you would think it would be dry. The flavor is definitely sweet with an orange/citrus flavor, but the acid strength is there and does not back down to the sweetness, making for a wonderful combination. The body is surprisingly full leading to a creamy effect without being overly heavy. Between the strong flavors and the full body the taste lasts well through the mid and late palate and is extremely enjoyable. Certainly a lovely 'drinking wine', but strong and full bodied enough to stand up to spicy food or other good typical riesling pairings. I must admit I am a fan of riesling in general and haven't tasted a lot of 'great' wines to compare it to, but I am very pleased with this wine. In the realm of sweet rieslings this one is top notch.

Ethereal aromas of lime and spring wildflowers introduce this rich, deftly balanced Spauml;tlese, then apple and lime flavors glide across the palate. Absolutely delicious now, but should age well too.

This Riesling from the Saar Valley in Germany is well worth the price. The minerality is strong from aroma through the complex finish. Apricot, lychee, and pear fruit hold their own next to the massive mineral presence. There is just the slightest hint of very ethereal and elegant botrytis. Imagine the smell and taste of drying, freshly-cut hay coated with honey, and let yourself return to the summers of your past while enjoying this standout Riesling from the outstanding 2005 vintage.

A lush, voluminous Riesling, with ripe apricot, lime and mineral lurking in the background. The structure is apparent from midpalate through finish, suggesting this needs more time to integrate. Best from 2006 through 2016.

Like being enveloped in a soft pillow of flowers and talc, this Riesling wields its peach, vanilla and mineral flavors on a delicate framework. Itrsquo;s smoothness hides the underlying acidity, but itrsquo;s there. Terrific slate finish. Drink now through 2010.

Exuding a fennel, green tea and almond flavor profile, this bracing rsquo;99 Mosel exhibits plenty of slate, with a lingering finish. Well done. Drink now through 2006.

Sharp and crisp, the nose presents traces of minerality paired with citrus fruits such as lime, pear and peach. The body is smooth, and offsets the heavy acidity with a touch of honey and vanilla. Perfect pairing for grilled seafood, or a great wine to enjoy on a summer evening.

Pale yellow. Attractive aromas of apple, acacia blossom and hazelnut. Creamy papaya fruit and supple texture are nicely brightened by a refined acidity. High-toned and pleasingly spicy on the finish.
