The 2006 Nero d' Avola Regaleali has been one of my favorite value-priced Italian wines going back to my student days. This hearty red reveals an attractive plumpness to its dark fruit, herbs and earthiness, with plenty of juiciness and style. The wine is aged primarily in medium sized Slavonian oak barrels, but a small amount of the wine sees French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011. Tasca d'Almerita is a reliable source for delicious wines from Sicily.
The estate's 2005 Regaleali Nero d'Avola, one of my long-time favorite value-priced wines from Sicily, is 100% Nero d'Avola beginning with the 2004 vintage. It exhibits the wilder side of Nero d'Avola in its suggestions of sweet cherries, earthiness, mint and gaminess with excellent length as well as depth on the palate. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2010.
This is a very ripe, hot climate wine with lavish chocolate fudge, minced clove, cinnamon and blackberry jam on the nose. But it also has a green component, like grilled bell pepper.
One of my favorite Sicilian wineries, Tasca d'Almerita produces expensive as well as impressive value-priced wines. The firm, tannic 2003 Rosso IGT (a blend of 90% Nero d'Avola and 10% Pericone) saw a small amount of old oak, which may explain why it tastes less fresh than its siblings. It should drink well for 2-3 years.
Offers bright blackberry and light coffee aromas. Full-bodied, with very good fruit, delicate tannins and medium finish. Drink now.
The 2007 Nero d'Avola Regaleali reveals lovely inner sweetness in its perfumed dark fruit. This medium-bodied, hearty red offers fine overall balance. Notes of mint and flowers give the wine a sense of lift on the finish. The entry-level Nero d'Avola Regaleali is aged in stainless steel. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.
This silky-textured red reveals an almost Pinot-like expression of red fruits, flowers, spices and toasted oak. Here the fruit is especially perfumed, while the finessed tannins frame the fruit with uncommon grace. It is a terrific effort that demonstrates the level of excellence Nero d Avola can reach with attentive work in the vineyard. The wine also benefits from a relatively high-altitude site. The cool evenings provide balance to the hot daytime temperat...ures resulting in a wine of notable elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012.
