Regaleali Bianco Sicilia 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The large Regaleali estate, high in the central Sicilian hills, has been in the hands of the noble Tasca family since 1830. Ever since, the property has been run according to the best principles of the agricultural aristocracy: with one eye firmly on quality, and the other on experimentation. Tasca’s large range is the product of the family’s most successful innovations, including short pruning for lower yields, the championing of local Inzolia and Nero d’Avola vines, the introduction of French varieties, and the use of barrique and temperature control. Even now, forty grape varieties from all over Europe are planted just for experimental purposes, with the possibility of making the grade in the future. However, there is already plenty on offer in this singularly accomplished range of Sicilian wines. The elegant white blend is delicately fruity on the nose with apple, peach and pink grapefruit notes. The palate is quite intense and crisp, with plenty of fresh fruit flavours.

The Tasca d'Almerita estate is situated in the Sclafani countryside, between the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta, near the former stronghold of Regaleali: 1200 hectars of land were reduced to 500 following the agrarian reform in 1950. The 400 hectares of vineyards are between landscapes of almond trees and olive trees, and among this expanse there are wheat, oat and eucalyptus plants, that create a rural landscape of rare charm and beauty. It is a striking and unmistakable site, which enjoys a microclimate ideal for wine cultivation thanks to an altitude that varies between 400 to 750 meters and temperature range that averages about 15 Celsius degrees at night. The careful safeguarding of the grapes aromatic properties, which give the wines a characteristic elegance and distinctiveness, is a result of a rather late maturation process, as well as careful vine selection and solid winemaking, practiced in this area since 1100. Light and floral on the nose with notes of melon and grapefruit pith. Nice acids up front enliven the palate which is light, perhaps a bit simple but fresh with nice purity to the peach and grapefruit flavors. This has ok length finishing with vibrant minerality, and is really very well balanced. Not a show stopper but very refreshing with good texture for a relatively light weight wine. 88pts

This winery, better known as Tasca drsquo;Almerita, has been a consistent entry into The Wine Advocatersquo;s best buy reports for their value-priced wines form Sicily. Considering how far south they are, these wines possess remarkable freshness, as evidenced by the 2005 Bianco IGT, a blend of such indigenous grapes as Inzolia, Caterratto, and Grecanico. No malolactic is employed for this crisp, elegant white. Aromas of green apples, white peaches, and lemon zest emerge from its medium-bodied, fruity personality. With good acidity and a superb finish, this stunning 2005 will drink well for 1ndash;2 years.

The 2007 Regaleali Bianco is a soft-textured, generous white with pretty notes of jasmine, white peaches and sweet spices. A blend of Inzolia, Catarratto and Grecanico (all indigenous varieties), it is fermented and aged in stainless steel. For many years Regaleali Bianco has been one of Italyrsquo;s most consistently excellent value-priced wines. This is another beautiful effort from Tasca drsquo;Almerita. Anticipated maturity: 2008ndash;2010.

I first tasted this wine almost 20 years ago, and it is still one of my all time favorites. Light and crisp, yet medium bodied, it is beautifully balanced with apricot and tropical fruit characteristics. Fantastic wine for sipping alone, or serve with grilled chicken or barbecued shrimp.

A crisp, light-bodied, floral, citrusy/apple scented and flavored wine, Regalealirsquo;s 1998 Bianco displays lively fruit, not much body, but a dry, clean finish. This completely tank-fermented and aged offering will have flexibility with an assortment of dishes.
