What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

I love this wine. #1 for a bargin pinot noir is is really good. It is very fruity and easy to drink. It is sweet and goes well with a casual dinner, pizza even. :) I recommend it for anyone looking for a good wine at a bargin price.

Scent of smoky berries. Tangy with a bit of coffee.

A stunning value with strawberry and red cherry fruit finishing with plush tannins. Enough varietal character to surprise even your wine geek friends.

After coming recommended from a friend, I picked up a bottle at Woodman's in Janesville, Wisconsin. The 750 ml bottle was on sale at $6.99.

I was disappointed. But only because of some of the hype I heard about this pinot. Darker than most of the value pinots I'm used to, it seemed a bit funky on the nose as it morphed in and out from anise to cranberries to Miller lite beer. It was on the heavier side of medium bodied, had balanced acidity and a nice mouth feel, but the flavor elements seemed disjointed - out of harmony. After finding only a fleeting wisp of candyish raspberry, the read more...
