Red Tail Ridge Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

Aged for 8 months in French and American barrels, and Hungarian puncheons. Located in New York's Finger Lakes region, Red Tail Ridge Winery is owned and operated by husband and wife Mike Schnelle and Nancy Irelan. As a former executive in charge of viticulture and oenology R&D at a large winery, Nancy strongly believes in sustainability. Not only is Red Tail Ridge farmed in a sustainable manner it is also the first LEED certified winery in New York. Everything at Red Tail Ridge reflects Nancy and Mike's attention to detail – the winery that they built from scratch to their limited production, premium single varietal wines. The bulk of Red Tail Ridge's production is Riesling, but Nancy and Mike have also planted several clones of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir alongside small experimental plots of Blaufrankisch, Dornfelder and Teroldego. Mike and Nancy's early efforts were duly noted by the press – they won several Gold and Silver medals, Wine Business Monthly named Red Tail Ridge one of its Hot Small Brands of 2008 and Eric Asimov the wine critic of The New York Times has lauded them for their efforts. Red Tail Ridge Winery is located on the western shore of Seneca Lake —in the heart of New York State ’s Finger Lakes region—and we are devoted to producing premium dry wines. We believe that wine should be a representation of the land from which it was produced—right down to the packaging. As a result, we chose to name the winery after the nesting hawks that live in the woods near our property. They are our constant vineyard companions and inspiration. Currently, we have 3 acres of Pinot Noir clones, 2 acres of Chardonnay, 14 acres of Riesling, and the rest of our 20 acre vineyard is devoted to Teroldego and Dornfelder. We spend a lot of time and energy to ensure that our vines are healthy and well-balanced, because growing premium grapes is the first step to making premium wine. Our wines, like our grapes, are carefully hand-crafted. We produce small-lots (sometimes less than 50 cases) to further preserve and enhance the varietal characteristics that we generate in the vineyard. We encourage people to taste our wines at the tasting room, which is set on top of the ridge within our vineyards. The scenic drive through the vines and the quiet atmosphere provide the perfect venue for wine-tasting, and they make Red Tail Ridge Winery one of the most unique destinations in the Finger Lakes. We look forward to seeing you soon. Tasting Hours - by appointment Read less

Aromatic of sweet cream, ripe apple and buttered popcorn, this luxurious Chardonnay counters richness of flavor with brisk acidity and impeccably balanced alcohol. It’s irresistibly luscious but elegant.

Wow what a great buy! I happened upon this one by chance and boy am I glad I found it. This wine greets you with a yeasty nose with hints of apple. A bit bashful at first it turned out to be a deliciously chewy wine rich and full of flavor; raisin bread toasted with apricot jam banana muffins and apple sauce can all be found in the palate. Finishes clean. An awesome unoaked New York Chardonnay.
