Red Rock Winery Winemaker's Blend Reserve 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Wine Description: Zinfandel and Syrah added layers of ripe strawberry and cherry with notes of pepper. Dark plum, boysenberry and blueberry aromas and flavors are complemented by intriguing toffee notes and the firm structure of Cabernet. Description: As any true explorer knows, inspiration comes in many forms. At Red Rock Winery, we get ours from the beauty of nature, which inspires us to create something spectacular with the tools we’ve been given. Each bottle of Red Rock is crafted as an everlasting oath—a promise—to put our all into every wine we make. These wines inspire us to never stop dreaming, to never stop climbing. Viticulture Notes: We selected the grapes for our Winemaker’s Blend from select California regions ideally suited to grow each variety--Lodi and Clarksburg for the Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a bit of the Zinfandel, and the Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County for the majority of the Zinfandel. The 2014 vintage in California mild and dry throughout most of the season. A few well-timed rains and warm, sunny weather in the summer allowed grapes to ripen at their own pace. Harvest was early and quick, resulting in wines that are well-balanced and fruit-forward. Winemaking Notes: The grapes were harvested at night and early in the morning in order to preserve their natural fruit characteristics. After destemming, the must fermented in a combination of upright, rotary and conesweep tanks for up to six days at a maximum temperature of 88°F. The Petite Sirah lent dark fruit flavors and depth to the blend, while Zinfandel and Syrah added juicy red fruit characteristics, while Cabernet bolstered the structure and complexity in the final wine. Varietal Content: 45% Petite Sirah 36% Zinfandel 13% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Syrah Titratable Acidity: 0.57g/100ml pH: 3.74 Alcohol Level: 13.9% Residual Sugar: .74g/100ml

Red Rock Winery:
Over the past decade Red Rock has gained an enviable reputation for producing superb ultra premium wines. They are handcrafted on the estate from vines that creep up the side of a dormant volcano west of Geelong. The mineral-rich soil, low rainfall and cool climate result in a unique terroir which, when coupled with sensitive winemaking, yields distinctly individual wines with power and finesse.

With hints of dark cherry, this Merlot is more likely to satisfy us red wine fans who tend toward cabs and syrahs. It is filling but not overwhelming for those expecting a more typical merlot
