Rating: 88/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. Its simple State appellation and its modest price may not be the signposts of noteworthy Merlot, but this surprising effort is just that and earns an enthusiastic endorsement for genuine value. It is keyed on very well-defined, moderately deep, ripe cherry fruit and shows the substance, structure and balance of a wine costing a good deal more, and it has all of the signs of one that will get better over the next four or five years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

Here's what Gallo does so well, a huge production (more than 100,000 cases) of a pleasing, clean wine, at a decent everyday price. Plump and juicy, it pleases for the cherry jam, black raspberry tart, red currant, licorice and spice flavors. Finishes with real sophistication.
The 2008 Merlot reveals straightforward fruit, soft tannins and a mid-weight, fresh, somewhat simple style. It should be consumed over the next 2-3 years.
A sleeper of the vintage, as well as an outstanding bargain, the 2007 Merlot is fashioned from 50% Sonoma fruit, 10% from Napa, and 40% from Central Coast regions. Small amounts of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon have been added to the blend. Elegant mocha and dark berry fruit are followed by a medium-bodied, silky-textured red that tastes as if it should cost 2-3 times the price. It is meant to be drunk during its first 2-3 years of life to take advantage of its exuberant, fruity youthfulness.
Winemaker's Notes:
The grapes for the 2008 Merlot were de‐stemmed but not crushed, leaving about 20% whole berries in the fermenter. This “Partial Whole Berry Fermentation” method was used to enhance the varietal character of the finished wine. The grapes were then fermented on the skins for five to seven days at a temperature of 88° F. The entire blend underwent Malolactic Fermentation to add complexity to the aroma and flavor and to ensure stability in the finished wine. The wine was bottle aged for two months prior to release. The creation of Red Rock Merlot starts in the vineyard thru the use of viticultural practices that give red and black jammy flavors while providing balance and finesse. These flavors are complemented by soft, rounded tannins. We take care to balance body with flavor, achieving a delicate harmony found in only the finest wines. This Merlot is an excellent match for a wide range of foods, offering a delicious balance to herb‐based dishes (rosemary, thyme, tarragon, and mint), pastas with red sauce, grilled meats and cheeses, ranging from tangy goat cheese to smoked Gouda. Merlot by nature is a soft, enjoyable wine with lush, plum‐like flavors and notes of blackberry and cherry. The grape is naturally low in tannins with a smooth and velvety finish. It is no surprise then, that the Merlot grape, which originated inFrance, is still the most widely planted varietal in Bordeaux. With its introduction to California, where well‐drained soils and warmer climates bring out the best in this early‐maturing varietal, Merlot has yielded exceptional wines marked by natural balance, smooth tannins, and rich flavors of fruit.
Tasting Notes:
The Red Rock Winery 2008 California Merlot exhibits aromas of ripe cherry, strawberry, and raspberry; all framed by a touch of sweet vanilla flavor. The palate is rich, giving flavors of briary blackberry and raspberry fruits.
