Red Rock Winery Merlot California Reserve 2007
The grapes for the 2007 Merlot were de-stemmed but not crushed, leaving about 20% whole berries. This “Partial Whole Berry Fermentation” method was used to enhance the varietal character of the finished wine. The grapes were then fermented on the skins for five to seven days at a temperature of 88° F. The entire blend underwent Malolactic Fermentation to add complexity to the aroma and flavor and to ensure stability in the finished wine. The wine was bottle aged for two months to ensure a smooth, pleasing wine. Merlot by nature is a soft, enjoyable wine with lush, plum-like flavors and notes of blackberry and cherry. The grape is naturally low in tannins with a smooth and velvety finish. It is no surprise then, that the Merlot grape, which originated in France, is still the most widely planted varietal in Bordeaux. With its introduction to California, where welldrained soils and warmer climates bring out the best in this early-maturing varietal, Merlot has yielded exceptional wines marked by natural balance, smooth tannins, and rich concentrations of fruit.
Over the past decade Red Rock has gained an enviable reputation for producing superb ultra premium wines. They are handcrafted on the estate from vines that creep up the side of a dormant volcano west of Geelong. The mineral-rich soil, low rainfall and cool climate result in a unique terroir which, when coupled with sensitive winemaking, yields distinctly individual wines with power and finesse.
Nice on the palette, tannins are under control. Some merlots seem harsh, but not this one. Yummy :)
I love a good, smooth Merlot that's not real jammy. The Red Rock 2007 does it for me.. Love it!
Plum colored with think legs. Acidic fruit aromas but not too sweet. Very smooth and drinkable with a clean, velvet finish. For a $10 merlot, you'd have a hard time finding a better tasting wine. Everything about this wine is subtly balanced and the flavor bursts onto your palate. Very good overall. Consider it for your value priced collection.
