Red Rock Winery Malbec California Reserve 2009
Red Rock Winery’s Reserve Malbec reveals ripe berry and floral aromas with fresh flavors of boysenberry, currants, and cherries. The rounded tannins offer a silky mouth feel, ending in a smooth, fruit-focused finish. In order to ensure an exceptionally balanced wine, our winemakers blended a few different varietals into our Malbec to soften the tannins and add spicy and rich flavors. We take care to balance body with flavor, achieving a delicate harmony found in only the finest wines. This Malbec is an excellent match for a variety of foods including barbecued or roasted chicken, pasta or ravioli in a red meat sauce, and cheeses such as Asiago, Romano, Fontina and Gouda. Although it was historically grown as a blending grape in the Bordeaux region of France, it has seen recent popularity as a single-varietal wine out of Argentina. Malbec, a thin-skinned grape, thrives with the abundance of sun and warm, dry weather offered in some growing climates in California. Like France, California has traditionally used Malbec as a blending grape but opportunities to showcase this full-bodied varietal are increasing. Malbec is characterized by its deep purple color, smooth tannins, and ripe fruit flavors The grapes for our 2009 Malbec were de-stemmed and then fermented in upright fermentors for 10-14 days at a maximum temperature of 88° F. The entire blend underwent malolactic fermentation to soften the mouth feel, add complexity to the aromas and flavors, and to ensure stability in the finished wine. The wine was aged on its lees for 9 months prior to bottling.
Over the past decade Red Rock has gained an enviable reputation for producing superb ultra premium wines. They are handcrafted on the estate from vines that creep up the side of a dormant volcano west of Geelong. The mineral-rich soil, low rainfall and cool climate result in a unique terroir which, when coupled with sensitive winemaking, yields distinctly individual wines with power and finesse.
Editorial Reviews for Red Rock Winery Malbec California Reserve
Shy and very tight on the nose with nice black cherry, plum vanilla, and bacon notes topped with a hint of maple syrup. Medium full bodied though this is nicely transparent with a fine bed of supportive tannins and layers of maple syrup, ripe herb, and vanilla tones over the core of black, plummy fruit. This finishes with decent length though the wood tones take the upper hand here and lead to a nice, slightly sweetened cigarbox note on the finale. 85pts
Dusty cherry aromas and bright red fruit. A little thin towards the end but it lasts long and has some extra cocoa and a little menthol towards the finish.
Big fruit here on the nose and in the mouth with a hint of cedar. Classic dark fruit with just enough bite!
fruity and a bit vegetal, cauliflower? not a fan.
Loved it! Just a bit smoother and fruitier than their merlot.

Slightly more interesting, the 2009 Malbec exhibits darker berries along with hints of earth, cocoa and spice box. Medium-bodied and riper than the Merlot, it is a blend of 76% Malbec, 8% Syrah and the rest Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It should be consumed over the next 2ndash;3 years.
