Ravines Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Finger Lakes 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2015 Pinot Noir was aged for ten months in 95% used French oak and comes in at 13% alcohol. Mostly sourced from 16 Falls Vineyard (about a fourth from White Springs), this vintage featured very low yields due to frost damage, said winemaker-owner Morton Hallgren, "about half of normal production." Ravines is one of several FLX producers making a big push for Pinot Noir. It looks like it can be a signature red grape for the region eventually (although I suspect Lemberger will give it some competition). The color is modest on this understated Pinot, but the wine is beautifully constructed. It is caressing in texture up front, while the finish lingers nicely. However, if it is elegant in the mid-palate and sensual in texture, it still finishes with some grip, demonstrating its nice structure. The tannins are not hard, but they provide support for this fresh and earthy wine. Regarding that last part, this does have a little bit of a gamey nuance and aromatic. Overall, I liked it, and it does very well. It will probably need a food pairing to show its best. You can approach this now, but it will improve over the next couple of years, at the least.Wine Advocate 88pts
