Ravines Wine Cellars Finger Lakes Keuka Village White 2015

Member Review by joebernardinoATyahoo:

Cayuga White / Vignoles, but it reminded me of Seyval Blanc. On the dry side, with citrus and good acidity.

Believe it or not, this wine is the best pairing for pickles I have ever had. There is a distinct sodium element on the palate which fades away to gorgeous supple fruit when paired with pickles. Must be tried to be believed. This is why i love wine/food pairings because you discover the most random flavor combinations.

it's a cross between Schuyler and Seyval Blanc--two hybrids--so not technically a native grape, but, it was developed at Cornell University's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York (that's in the Finger Lakes) specifically to succeed in the sometimes-challenging growing conditions there. It is a hardy variety with some bunch-rot disease resistance, but can easily result in foxy, grapy flavors if not picked early enough. Clearly the grapes that went into this wine were picked before those flavors developed, because this is the first Cayuga-dominated wine I've tasted that I've actually enjoyed...and would buy and drink again. It's not a wine to contemplate, but it's absolutely balanced, fresh and delicious.

Very nice crisp white wine. Light green apple smell. Tangy apple flavor just a hint of toast. Good Summer wine to enjoy picnicing with friends.

With this innovative blend, we are producing a French-American hybrid blend that breaks down the boundary between traditional hybrid wines and vinifera wines. The nose shows great fruity intensity with aromas of melon, peach and mango. In addition, the wine displays noticeable floral and mineral components which results in a broad array of aromas. This is a very lively, fresh, fruity off-dry wine with just enough sweetness to balance the acidity, resulting in a smooth, easy-drinking white wine for just about any occasion. - Winemaker Notes

As someone who writes about, and tastes, a lot of New York wines, there are a lot of non-vinifera wines that cross my palate. I know. I know. These sorts of wines conjure up images of sweet, foxy wines that few wine lovers enjoy. And it's true, many are awful. But, some are serviceable and a rare few are stunningly, and surprisingly, delicious. This is one such wine. Ravine's owner and winemaker, Morten Hallgren, was raised in Provence and brings a diverse winemaking background to the Finger Lakes. He started his career in France but has also worked in Texas and North Carolina. And, he is best known in these parts for his six years as head winemaker at Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars. The bottle doesn't hint at the grapes inside, but this blend of 80 percent Cayuga White and 20 percent Vignoles, is unique but vaguely reminiscent of the deliciously affordable blends from Alsace. The nose is fruity and fresh with loads of melon and peach with just a little floral character and minerality. Medium-to-light bodied, those some fruits dominate the palate with slightly tropical hints as well. There is a light sweetness here, but more than enough acidity to bring balance.
