Saturated ruby color. Musky aromas of cassis, pepper and spicy oak; shows a slightly grapey quality. Dense but somewhat monolithic dark berry flavor supported by ripe acids. Every year, Ravenswood winemaker Joel Peterson finds small lots of well-made Zinfandel, which he combines with some of his own juice to produce Vintnerrsquo;s Blend. The wine has spice, ripe raspberry aroma and flavors of black cherry, mint and vanilla and finishes crisp and clean. Enjoy its spicy, bright fruit with chili or grilled hamburgers.

The 1997 Zinfandel Napa (14.3% alcohol) takes first prize. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by a big, peppery, spicy nose with underlying minerals and black fruits. There is very good density in this appealing value. Drink it over the next 2ndash;3 years.
