No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different vineyards. In 1982 Ravenswood made their first Zinfandel with grapes from multiple vineyards, creating its County Series: wines that feature regional distinctions. Today, it sources grapes from over 100 vineyards in northern California, a huge expansion from its original vagabond roots. Read less

2007 Teldeschi Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel – Planted between 1913 and 1919 predominantly to Zinfandel with almost a quarter Petite Sirah and a smattering of Carignane vines. 31% new wood. Powerful on the nose and while more marked by cherry wood the big, plummy and dark cherry fruit seems able to handle the spice. There is a touch of butterscotch that is a bit disconcerting but nice earthy tones balance it nicely. This is remarkably elegant considering the weight and depth of the dark fruit on the palate. The fruit is fresh and crisp, bright ollaliberries framed with cigar box and spice tones. A rather refined Zin. 93pts

Confermented with mixed blacks, predominantly Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante, from this very cool site with sandy soils. Planted in about 1900. 32% new wood. Big and bushy on the nose with notes of briar, seashells and big peppery top notes, some herbal tones give this a green peppercorn quality. Big, rich and juicy in the mouth with red apple acids giving real snap to the dark, earthy fruits. This finishes with big structure, those red apple acids as well as slightly drying, aggressive tannins. The boysenberry fruit on the palate is floating a bit beneath the structure with hints of dried leaves and smoky tones adding some complexity, Very youthful feeling with room to improve. 90pts

Deep, complex, floral and fungal. Rustic and full of plum and raisin, finishes with a hint of olive and dark chocolate.

a full bodied, deep wine filled with dark berries - blackberries, plums, currant, and spice with a more chocolate finish. can certainly age but will go terrific with a big steak dinner

Nose of bread and baking spice - lots of complexity. Delicate currants in the mouth with a well-integrated acidity but a gentile finish with hints of cocoa.

(471 views) Tasted by Bowmanifesto on 9/26/2012 & rated 92 points: Powerhouse Zin, in its prime. Dark indigo for the eyes. Robust fruits for the nose. Jammy thrills for the palate. Lsting finish for the entire experience. First class wine at a coach class price. (624 views) Tasted by bzukaitis on 9/22/2012: Great again. Fruit forward slightly acidic. Ready to go. Drink up. (561 views) Tasted by Anonymous on 9/21/2012 & rated 90 points: Great upfront fruit with good pepper finish. Not as peppery as the 2008. (575 views) Tasted by prasm on 9/3/2012 & rated 89 points: Popped 1 hour before first pour, consumed over 4 hours. Nose: Medium expressiveness, black raspberry, blueberry, and black pepper. Palate: Medium bodied, dark red fruit up front, low acidity, turns a bit hollow through the mid-palate but what makes it through to the back end is tasty - sweet light raspberry and blueberry. Finish: Medium length red and blue fruit. (866 views) Tasted by ecola on 8/14/2012 & rated 91 points: Restrained dark fruit that is balanced by minerality and acidity. Red berries start to come out after a few hours. A very balanced zin for those looking for something not jammy. (1139 views) Tasted by ogres3 on 7/19/2012: Full bodied, nice fruit, good finish. Had with red beans and rice. Nice combo. (1385 views) Tasted by Beebe on 7/18/2012: Consistent with note from 2/2012. Very nice Zin. 91+/- (1430 views) Tasted by corkscrews on 7/15/2012 & rated 90 points: A nose of dark cherry, dark purple in the core of the glass, lightening to a bit of a garnet red on the edges. This single vineyard Zin is medium to full bodied, with a long finish. The alcohol comes through, but not too hot. The wine is robust and full-flavored, with a touch of dark fruit, but more obviously, a smoky, meaty element. www.winelx.com (1347 views) Tasted by bkrup on 7/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Drinking very well right now.

This is Ravenswood's introductory Zinfandel. A full-bodied red with black berry fruit, cherries, and pepper aromas. If you like this Zin, try the rest of their wines: you'll immediately see the family resemblance.

Medium ruby; pleasant, floral, herbal, briary, toasty, raspberry fruit aroma with a hint of cigar-box; medium-full body; fairly big, rich, jammy, plummy, tarrish, high-extract flavors with good depth; lingering aftertaste. Above-average quality. Highly recommended.

Deep ruby. Highly perfumed bouquet of black raspberry, apricot and potpourri expands with air and picks up a subtle tobacco quality. A real basket of fruits on the palate, offering flavors of plum, cherry, red and dark berries and exotic apricot and ... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A solid wine, with a firm texture and lots of plum and raspberry aromas and flavors. Hints at vanilla and turns a mite tannic on the finish, so probably best to drink after 1993.

A well-structured wine with charming, youthful fruit. The wine has spicy, ripe raspberry aromas and flavors of black cherry, mint and vanilla. It finishes crisp and clean.
