Ravenswood Zinfandel Old Vine Napa 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A touch balsamic on the nose with warm, powder sugar covered black berry and raspberry aromas and just a hint of wood smoke adding detail. A bit thick and chewy on entry, this shows lovely depth on the palate with a bit of black spice and hints of briar wood layered over brambly fruit. A bit on the tannic side, but certainly remaining in harmony, this is clear ands fresh on the palate with some of that tannic weight adding a little austerity to the moderately long fruit and savory earth toned finish. Serious and well balanced and worth checking in on in a year as well. 88pts

No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different vineyards. In 1982 Ravenswood made their first Zinfandel with grapes from multiple vineyards, creating its County Series: wines that feature regional distinctions. Today, it sources grapes from over 100 vineyards in northern California, a huge expansion from its original vagabond roots. Read less

Be prepared for the full- on rush of flavors and aromas that only old vine Zinfandel from Napa Valley can deliver. This bold wine takes no prisoners with its full- bodied aromas and flavors of bright blackberry and black cherry help up by luscious notes of cocoa and baking spices. The wine finishes off with jammy fruit, dark chocolate and lively acidity. In keeping with the weather this vintage, expect a very ripe Zin with an almost earthy quality. ~ The Winery ~

This rating is on the 2006 vintage of Old Vine Napa. Just ok. I enjoy the 2005 Zinfandel old vine Lodi from Ravenswood: quality to price ratio is very high. I haven't enjoyed any of the other Ravenswood Zinfandels much at all.

Well, this wine had a lot of the "zips" and "zings" that I think a zinfandel should have, but strangely enough, they seemed to be in all the wrong places, and seemed to crash into each other, rather than flow with one another. so it just came out all wrong for me. That seems odd beings that it is a blend, and could be crafted in order for the different components to work together better Maybe since this is Ravenswood entry level wine with several higher options, they're just displaying a little bit of that zinfandel magic, but in way that will not fully satisfy (I wasn't satisfied, anyway), in order to prod people on to other levels.

Elder berry on the nose and pallet. Not much else to speak of. But a decent little wine.

A reasonable, tannic wine without the strong fruit that comes with a high end Zinfandel. Drinkable and good value, but somewhat dull.

Deep ruby. Black raspberry, cherry and licorice aromas, with a whiff of dried flowers. A fresh midweight, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and a hint of cracked pepper. Turns more tangy on the finish, which leaves brisk berry and cherry skin notes behind.

Medium red. Fresh redcurrant and strawberry aromas are lightly kissed by smoky herbs. Silky and fine, with bright red fruit and herb flavors, smooth tannins and a persistent raspberry note on the finish. Pretty impressive for the money, and there are 6 million bottles of this. Irsquo;ve bought this at gas stations! Peterson notes that it was fermented completely with native yeasts.

Straightforward, balanced and generous in flavor, echoing cherry and toast on a moderately long finish. Easy to approach but firm enough in texture to complement serious food.

This wine is made with grapes from every traditional Zin-growing area in California. It has strong notes of raspberry and spice, backed by enough oak to lend it presence, and sufficient structure to give it backbone.

Chewy Zin, with concentrated dried wild berry, dried raspberry and strawberry jam flavors. Pretty vanilla tones linger, along with modest tannins and a slight metallic note. Good value from a Zinfandel specialist. Drink now through 2006.

A gutsy wine with fruit sourced from notable vineyards throughout the valley, this Old Vine Zinfandel is expressive with notes of warm spice and vanilla. Powerful, full-bodied raspberry and blackberry flavors with structured tannins.

Here you'll find an almost voluptuous, concentrated yet satiny-smooth expression of intense raspberry fruit. It opens into a focused, lingering wine that captured not only the essence of the grape but also the style of the vintage. All of Joel Peterson's wines are a pleasure to taste, this one is widely available.
