No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different vineyards. In 1982 Ravenswood made their first Zinfandel with grapes from multiple vineyards, creating its County Series: wines that feature regional distinctions. Today, it sources grapes from over 100 vineyards in northern California, a huge expansion from its original vagabond roots. Read less

Licorice and rich spice on the nose with soft cherry and red currant notes, lightly floral. Dark mixed berry, gritty tannins and brooding spice with black cherry and blackberry flavors, a not-so-subtle earthiness on the finish that’s thick with tar and espresso notes.

Great, big, slightly jammy raspberry, Zin berry aromas with notes of vanilla and sweet cinnamon-sugar toast greet the nose. This is big entry, with a hint of sweetness accenting the plummy fruit which shows tons of wild berry fruit, black raspberry, and bramble on the finish. This is a big, complete Zin, not nuanced but layered and balanced, and packed with fruit. Structurally it’s a bit on the softer side, making it very approachable today. 90 points

Black and briary on the nose with a little blue plum fruit followed by complex notes of hickory smoke and tree bark, with floral top notes and a hint of a beefy edge. Nice and snappy in the mouth with a lighter-styled mouthfeel showing decent acidity. This has lovely fruit, blue plum, wild cherry, and boysenberry that are fragrant in the mouth and supported by plenty of soft tannins that add a little edge of austerity that carries through on the modest finish. This would really be great if it showed more follow through, but it is eminently drinkable and shows lovely perfumes. 90 points

2007 Teldeschi Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel – Planted between 1913 and 1919 predominantly to Zinfandel with almost a quarter Petite Sirah and a smattering of Carignane vines. 31% new wood. Powerful on the nose and while more marked by cherry wood the big, plummy and dark cherry fruit seems able to handle the spice. There is a touch of butterscotch that is a bit disconcerting but nice earthy tones balance it nicely. This is remarkably elegant considering the weight and depth of the dark fruit on the palate. The fruit is fresh and crisp, bright ollaliberries framed with cigar box and spice tones. A rather refined Zin. 93pts

Confermented with mixed blacks, predominantly Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante, from this very cool site with sandy soils. Planted in about 1900. 32% new wood. Big and bushy on the nose with notes of briar, seashells and big peppery top notes, some herbal tones give this a green peppercorn quality. Big, rich and juicy in the mouth with red apple acids giving real snap to the dark, earthy fruits. This finishes with big structure, those red apple acids as well as slightly drying, aggressive tannins. The boysenberry fruit on the palate is floating a bit beneath the structure with hints of dried leaves and smoky tones adding some complexity, Very youthful feeling with room to improve. 90pts

Fruity and berry forward with jam-like qualities. A nice, not-complex wine that's casual and easy.

This particular wine has a nice deep ruby color in the glass, and the nose exhibits aromas of leather, blackberry, plum and black cherry, and just the faintest hint of baking spice. The taste is very fruit forward, a very "jammy" sort of Zin, with flavors of ripe plum, cherries, and blackberries, giving way to some fresh herbs, cedar and spice notes midpalate. The tannins are quite well developed, leading to a nice, tight dry finish. Today I received a delivery of 5 bottles of 2008 Ravenswood Teldeschi Zin from wineshopper.com! So tonight I will enjoy a bottle. The 2008 Ravenswood Teldeschi Zinfandel comes from a great family vineyard run by the Teldeschi family and focusing on growing Zin, along with petite syrah and carignane, which are often blended with this wine. The wine expresses everything I expect in a great Zin, the nose is full of bright fruit, blackberry, cherry, black currant, along with a wonderful hint of cedar and tobacco. The color is an inky, dark purple that suggest the strength of the wine and the smoothness of the tannins. On the palate it's a simply delicious and vibrant explosion of fruit, followed by a long, smooth, dry finish that is so characteristic of the Zins of the Dry Creek Valley in the Sonoma Valley. So wonderful, it would pair well with a grilled steak, seared tuna with a wasabi glaze, or a simple Italian dish, like the sausage with onions and multi-colored peppers I am enjoying it with tonight! Keep in mind also, this is a young wine, and although I treated myself tonight, the remaining bottles will likely be cellared for at least a few years to mature. Overall, this wine is a little expensive, with a usual price around $35, but I got a great deal on this for only $21, and for that price I rate this a solid 4 to 4.5! There are so many other great wines from Ravenswood I'd encourage you to try, from their basic everyday table reds for $8-9 to their exclusive single vineyard bottlings, they are all high quality, great wines that have never disappointed me!

Winemaker Joel Peterson’s wallet-friendly zin is in good form in 2012, with additions of syrah, petite and other mixed blacks building meaty savor into its warming, slightly jammy texture. It’s a heady red for barbecue.

A zesty little Zin, with easygoing cherry, spice and toasted herb flavors. Drink now through 2017.

Joel Peterson, who many consider to be one of California's most talented Winemakers, founded Ravenswood with the idea of making bold wines with rich flavors. His famous logo with the "Don't" symbol over the words "Wimpy Wines" tells the story. And from his single vineyard wines to his AVA wines down to his Vintner's Blend series the mission is clear; big flavor, ripe forward fruit and lush appeal. This Zin is sourced from old vine vineyards with low yields and densely concentrated berries. It makes carrying out the Ravenswood mission all that much easier. This 2012 was aged 12 months in French oak barrels. It's zesty and bright with lush berry notes, lively spice and good balancing acidity. A steal at this price.

WHAT YOU’RE IN FOR: Not a poser Zin, but a real one. Big, bold, unapologetic. This 2012 rendition leads the charge with tantalizing aromas of black cherry, raspberries, and blueberries along with hints of oak. It then gets really serious with a cascade of fruit flavors, oh-so-flexible tannins, and a long, fruit-forward finish you’re not going to forget very easily. - Winery Varietal Breakdown: 78% Zinfandel 18% Petite Sirah 4% Mixed Blacks Aging: 10 months in French oak, 20% new Total Acidity: 5.3g/L pH: 3.73

This blend is rich, yet soft, with complexity, and a spicy, ripe raspberry aroma. With flavors of black cherries, mint and vanilla, this Zinfandel has a sturdy and slightly astrigent finish.
