No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different vineyards. In 1982 Ravenswood made their first Zinfandel with grapes from multiple vineyards, creating its County Series: wines that feature regional distinctions. Today, it sources grapes from over 100 vineyards in northern California, a huge expansion from its original vagabond roots. Read less

Classic aromatics of peppery, briary spice and smoke that help to add definition to the wild blackberry fruit tones. In the mouth this sneakily gives the impression of being rather modestly scaled though it's bursting with pure, ripe fruit. the balance is remarkably fine lending belying the wines true size. Perfectly ripe and in a rather spicy style that is drinking well today 91pts.

Fairly closed nose. Acidic and hot. This wine is ok with something starchy but isn't really my taste without food.

lots of mushrooms on the nose, zippy acidity and cranberry flavor, not much else in the way of fruit. Medium body and dry. Oh, and LOTS of alcohol...15%!

Lots of alcohol. Vintner's blend is better.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine ReviewRated 95With lots and lots of well-defined, optimally ripened blackberry and stone fruit notes leading the way in both its very deep, full-scaled aromas and wonderfully well-extracted flavors, this year's Teldeschi hits all the right varietal marks. It is at once endowed with zesty acidity and palpable tannins, yet both of those pieces of the puzzle are appropriately buffered by plenty of real fruit at its very heart. The wine's obvious richness may tempt some into early drinking, but this one is bound to get better and better if allowed three to five years in bottle.Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ReviewRated 91-92Saturated purple. Explosively aromatic nose features powerful blackberry, candied plum and fruitcake notes and an exotic Asian spice element. Not at all heavy, though, with the palate showing impressively energetic red and dark berry flavors, molten tannins and a taut, youthful quality on the back. According to Peterson, "this is the best fruit out of Dry Creek Valley."

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ReviewMedium red. Fresh, spicy aromas of energetic raspberry and redcurrant, cured tobacco and pungent herbs. Crisp and nicely focused, with pure red berry flavors, medium weight and a lightly chewy texture. The bright, firm finish shows good depth and length.Wine Tasting NotesBright, flashy, ripe raspberry, blackberry and vanilla flavors are wrapped around a soft sweet fruit core highlighted by scents of cinnamon.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ReviewMedium red. Primal and grapey on the nose, with fresh raspberry and blackberry scents complicated by pepper and dried flowers. A suggestion of espresso adds depth to energetic red and dark fruit flavors. Silky tannins frame lush red berry compote flavors on the supple finish. As youthful as this is, it's delicious right now.Wine Tasting NotesPleasing bright, ripe plum flavors with mouth-watering acidity and fine tannin structure followed by a racy, lingering finish that tastes of raspberries, cloves, cardamom and vanilla

76% Zinfandel, 8% Petite Sirah, 8% Carignane, 8% Mixed BlacksRipe berry fruit in the nose follows concentrated flavors of blackberry and black cherry. A varietally focused Zinfandel with a touch of cinnamon and vanilla in the finish, this wine offers layers of flavor, a succulent center, balanced acids and structural tannins.
