Ravenswood Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Effusively fruity on the nose with briar toned blackberry and plummy fruit along with streaks of vanilla, caramel, and a hint of coconut. This is wide open in the mouth yet not opulent with a touch of chewiness to the rich, ripe briar and tar tinged cherry and blackberry fruit that shows remarkable clarity on the palate at this price point. A little spicy on the backend, then dropping off a bit on the finish which shows a hints of sandy soil tones that linger on the palate. This is a little on the fleshy side but well balanced and fresh with a rather long, acid driven red cherry finish. 88pts

No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different vineyards. In 1982 Ravenswood made their first Zinfandel with grapes from multiple vineyards, creating its County Series: wines that feature regional distinctions. Today, it sources grapes from over 100 vineyards in northern California, a huge expansion from its original vagabond roots. Read less

Jammy fruits on the nose with lots of plum and crushed berry tones with a toffeed edge and notes of cedar and slate in the back ground. Big and soft with drying tannins and adequate acidity. A bit dull though there are sweet roasted strawberry tones accented with a hint of black pepper. A bit short as well. 83pts

A red fruited and balanced with soft tannins. Not your usual Lodi wine.

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass with very nice clarity. The nose is classic Lodi Zin, rich ripe black fruit, blackberries, black cherry, blueberries and plum over a smoky layer of leather and cedar intertwined with some green grass and herbs. The taste is just a pleasure from the first sip, with rich jammy fruit bursting forward that transitions effortlessly to some black pepper and Asian spice notes midpalate. The finish is warm, smooth and very dry with well structured tannins that give this wine a backbone that's ideal for summer barbecue fare. This Old Vine Zinfandel had a deep ruby red color. The nose was dominated by plums, strawberry jam, blackcurrant jam and earth. The wine had a label listed ABV of 14.5%. Unfortunately, I could smell the alcohol, too. On the palate, Old Vine Zinfandel was very fruit-forward. There were some minerals and a decent acidity, too. The wine had a small/medium body and mellow tannins. Ravenswood's Old Vine Zinfandel had a finish of medium length. Tasting notes from Vino in Love: http://vinoinlove.com

Strong and robust with cherry, cinnamon, and spicy pepper on the nose. Pomegranate flavors, structured tannins well placed. Just like Joel says, "no wimpy wines", and so far I agree.

You'll get taken over by aromas and flavors of black cherries, currant, clove and cocoa, with soft, full tannins and balanced acidity for an achingly long and oh-so-pleasant finish.

A solid wine, with a firm texture and lots of plum and raspberry aromas and flavors. Hints at vanilla and turns a mite tannic on the finish, so probably best to drink after 1993.

The 1997 Zinfandel Napa (14.3% alcohol) takes first prize. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by a big, peppery, spicy nose with underlying minerals and black fruits. There is very good density in this appealing value. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

Strong, earthy Zin, with basic flavors of wild berries, tobacco and dried herbs. Dry and pretty tannic. Not much subtlety, and certainly not a wimpy wine.

Readers looking for a $10 Zinfandel that admirably displays that varietal's berry character along with tangy spice should check out Ravenswood's 1999 Zinfandel Vintner's Blend. It is a medium-weight, correctly made effort that is best consumed over the next 12-18 months.

The Vintners Blend has a rich, somewhat soft, moderately complex, spicy, ripe, raspberry aroma. The flavors are those of black cherries, mint and vanilla with a sturdy, slightly astringent finish. The freshness and youth they strive for in the Vintners Blend allow it to be released with slightly less barrel and bottle age.

Each year winemaker Joel Peterson combs the countryside to seek wineries with small lots of well-made Zinfandel, which are blended with some of Ravenswood's Zinfandel to produce a well-structured wine with charming, youthful fruit. The wine has spicy, ripe raspberry aromas and flavors of black cherry, mint and vanilla. It finishes crisp and clean.
