From 120-year old vines; 20% of this wine was from the second crop mdash; after the grower picked a huge first crop in August. Saturated dark ruby. Aromatic nose of blackberry jam, cracked pepper and molasses. Sweet, dense flavors of blueberry and dark chocolate leavened by strong acidity. Finishes with port-like notes.
Thick, rich, concentrated blueberry fruit, and bright, lively berry flavors hinting at raspberry give this wine that classic robust fruit of Zinfandel. Twelve monthsrsquo; maturation in a combination of new and old French oak barrels has rounded and fattened the wine while contributing notes of vanillin and subtle spice. Deliciously drinkable young for its precocious, soft, spicy berry fruit and lush texture.
Good, solid wine: Itrsquo;s light in color, firm and stony on the palate, the black fruit soft, round and supple in the midst of the firm structure. Black pepper and anise flavors fill out the warm finish mdash; not long but satisfying, setting the right tone for casual entertaining.
