Ravenswood California Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Review Rated 90-91 Deep ruby. Jammy raspberry and blackberry on the nose, with notes of fresh rose and baking spices adding complexity. Sappy dark berry flavors show liqueur-like intensity and depth but are also enlivened by juicy acidity. Impressively fresh, focused zinfandel with excellent finishing lift and thrust, leaving behind floral pastilles and smoky minerals. Wine Tasting Notes The Lodi is particularly bright and fruity with a soft, ripe roundness and well balanced acidity that should make this wine a pleasure to consume by itself or with a great meal.

No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different vineyards. In 1982 Ravenswood made their first Zinfandel with grapes from multiple vineyards, creating its County Series: wines that feature regional distinctions. Today, it sources grapes from over 100 vineyards in northern California, a huge expansion from its original vagabond roots. Read less

Jammy fruits on the nose with lots of plum and crushed berry tones with a toffeed edge and notes of cedar and slate in the back ground. Big and soft with drying tannins and adequate acidity. A bit dull though there are sweet roasted strawberry tones accented with a hint of black pepper. A bit short as well. 83pts

A flat and uninspired wine, with transparent additives.

Dark purple color. Medium to heavy bodied with a significant spice and a great deal of fruit. Blackberry and raspberry notes with well balanced tannins. Long finish. This is a great wine try if you have never ventured into the Lodi region.

odd woman out on this, it looks like. Classic Zin, in my opinion. Sour cherry and blueberry aromas, with a peppery note. Nice plum and blueberry flavors with a silky texture. Spicy aftertaste of clove, pepper, and allspice. Excellent QPR.

I've never met a Lodi that I didn't like, but I found this bottle to be extremely sweet tasting. I wouldn't have figured it to be a Zin in a blind taste test.

OK, so, I'm going to disagree. This wine is NOT lush, NOT concentrated, NOT big, &c. But, it has an asphalty nose that I love (admittedly in S. Rhones, but...) it has a balance of fruit suited to its tannins and acid, and I find it pleasant to sip, and a great Zin with food. So there. Gimme more!

Soft, round, spicy and jammy with voluptuous overtones of plums and blueberries, this wine lives large and irresistible in the here and now.
